WTF?! Took my 10/22 to the range this afternoon and was less then impressed. Every mag had at least 1 FTE or stovepipe. In fact at one point I found the cartridge stuck completely backwards on the bolt. Seemed to be in the middle of the mag, round 3, 4 or 5. I was using AE hollow point and have never had this problem before. The guys at the front counter even gave me 10 rounds of Remington to try and same problem.

It's a brand new bone stock 10/22. I've maybe put 200 rounds through it so far. Some of the guys there thought it might just be part of the break in period. This is the 2nd 10/22 I've owned and never had a problem like this with the first one, it worked flawlessly for thousands of rounds.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Looked like it was fairly cold in Edmonton today, maybe lubrication in the gun was a bit heavy and slowing the action up? Ever been out with it when it was as cold as today?

I used to have the same problem with my 10/22. It didn't matter what mag or ammo or combination of both I tried, I always had FTEs. Hot, cold, didn't matter. Really started to piss me off. I finally changed the stock extractor for a VQ.

Haven't had a FTE since.

I am not sure who has them here in Canada but you can get one from
Rimfiresports in the states.
Very easy to install yourself.

Rimfiresports in the states.
Also "http://www.hawktecharms.com/" in the states as well.

And I believe both still have free S&H to Canada.

You probably done this already but complete strip and clean it.
It's pretty bad that your having this problem with a new 10/22, it's cheap easy fix with a new extractor so you have to wonder why Ruger doesn't fix it in the factory.

don't worry, it's commonly said that a 10/22 requires a full brick of ammo to break in. so give'er until 500 rounds, and see how it works. then start spending your money. my RR model ran pretty good new, and now pretty much runs like a sewing machine!

try a few differend ammos, rimfires can be fussy over ammo.

i have a whole mess of mods to my RR now. it looks like factory but has been tuned up nicely. try polishing the moving parts, including the charging handle rod. to do a good job of it, you'll have to remove the peen that holds the assembly together and polish the rod.

carry on, things will get better. look up products from "rimfire technologies", they have been really popular, with great reviews.

best of luck!

Update

Took the 10/22 back to the range tonight after a thorough cleaning. Same old, same old! FTE or stove pipe on the 3rd or 4th round in every magazine. At one point I had a live round off to the side of the receiver blocked by a spent case beside it!?????

I had a friend shoot it and I stood to the side and watched. It seemed like the 'slide' wasn't going back all the way and on the FTE round there was a spark/flash from the receiver.

If this is part of the break in period it's going to be real frustrating putting another couple hundred rounds through it.

Would pics of the bent/crushed cases help diagnose this?

Try anymore different types of ammo?

I didn't tonight, just the AE I had been shooting. Some people have suggested try everything from cheap cheap to high end. What I'm hearing more and more is that some of the newer 10/22's are real finicky, especially during the 'break in' period.

I just find it frustrating! This is the second one I've owned. The 1st one was back in the early 90's and it work flawlessly from the 1st round through 1000's of others. I think I cleaned it once it that time. Should have never gotten rid of it. Hindsight......

CCI Stingers or Velocitors would be the ammo I'd try.
Have you tried a different factory magazine?

Suggestions I've found on RFC:
Polishing the guide rod
Aftermarket extractor
check your bolt to make sure it's not dragging on top of the mags

Causes of the slow or incomplete cycling of the 10/22's bolt(Also from RFC):
0 Gummed-up action: the Ruger applied ‘preservative’ was not removed before firing, or oil was used as a lube...! !
0 Rifle was stored vertically after cleaning, allowing oil to run into the action & gum-it-up...! !
0 Unlubed or rough "Bolt Handle Guide Rod" [B-7]...! !
0 Action not lubed with a dry Teflon type spray lube or "CLP"...! !
0 Action not 'broken-in' yet..! ! Normally it takes 1 - 2 bricks [500 rds ea.] of High Velocity ammo to ‘break-in’ a 10/22's action...! !
0 Use of Standard Velocity or Sub Sonic ammo...! !
0 Aftermarket action parts misinstalled...! !
0 Scope base mounting screws rubbing on the top of the bolt.
0 "Hammer Strut Assembly" reassembled with the 'slot' of the "Retaining Washer" facing down; it must face UP...! !
0 Use of a non Ruger magazine...! ! Use a Ruger BX-1...! !
0 Magazine not seating with a 'click'...! !
0 Dirty or untuned magazine(s); see the "Sticky" Post at the top of this Forum for "Magazine Service"...! !
0 Magazine touching the stock in magazine well; can you pass a business card up both sides of the magazine all-the-way to the receiver...? ?

CCI Stingers or Velocitors would be the ammo I'd try. Will do.
Have you tried a different factory magazine? Yes, I have 2.

Suggestions I've found on RFC:
Polishing the guide rod
Aftermarket extractor
check your bolt to make sure it's not dragging on top of the mags Can't see any evidence of it.

Causes of the slow or incomplete cycling of the 10/22's bolt(Also from RFC):
0 Gummed-up action: the Ruger applied ‘preservative’ was not removed before firing, or oil was used as a lube...! ! Possibly. I only cleaned the barrel.
0 Rifle was stored vertically after cleaning, allowing oil to run into the action & gum-it-up...! ! Nope.
0 Unlubed or rough "Bolt Handle Guide Rod" [B-7]...! ! Possible
0 Action not lubed with a dry Teflon type spray lube or "CLP"...! ! Will try.
0 Action not 'broken-in' yet..! ! Normally it takes 1 - 2 bricks [500 rds ea.] of High Velocity ammo to ‘break-in’ a 10/22's action...! ! Will try.
0 Use of Standard Velocity or Sub Sonic ammo...! ! AE Hollow point.
0 Aftermarket action parts misinstalled...! ! None.
0 Scope base mounting screws rubbing on the top of the bolt. Hmmmm?
0 "Hammer Strut Assembly" reassembled with the 'slot' of the "Retaining Washer" facing down; it must face UP...! ! Possible, if from factory
0 Use of a non Ruger magazine...! ! Use a Ruger BX-1...! ! Factory mags x 2
0 Magazine not seating with a 'click'...! ! They click.
0 Dirty or untuned magazine(s); see the "Sticky" Post at the top of this Forum for "Magazine Service"...! !
0 Magazine touching the stock in magazine well; can you pass a business card up both sides of the magazine all-the-way to the receiver...? ? One side is a bit tighter then the other.

Wouldn't any of these cause a failure more often? Mine only does it on the third or fourth round?

Thanks for all your help, btw! It's greatly appreciated!

0 Scope base mounting screws rubbing on the top of the bolt. Hmmmm?

Sometimes the screws go down into the receiver too far and rubs the top of the bolt. If you have the scope base mount it might be an issue otherwise ignore that.

Honestly from reading on RFC, the main thing to fix this is a VQ extractor. Some people have tried everything suggested, and only the new extractor fixed the issue. Ordering from the states means no taxes and no S&H(with the mentioned dealers), so you just paying the $11.50 + the currency conversion.
