I have seen this thread, but the feedback looks old. I am looking for a solid reliable plinker that is fun and accurate. I see the Ruger has lots of customization options, but the Marlin owners seem to love their choices too. Looking for pros and cons for Ruger and Marlin from those of you who have some run time with both. Either way, I am interested in a Boyds SS Evolution for it. Thank-you!

I've had at least 6 of the 1022s over the years. The newer ones aren't as well made as the older ones. None of them were particularly accurate even the heavy barrel editions, stainless or blue. Just fun plinkers. Last year I got my first Marlin 60 and was very impressed with the accuracy and price compared to the 1022s. Trigger was a little heavy though. There is something to the Micro Groove barrels. Then I got a Marlin 795. Wow. Good accuracy with a better trigger(luck) and mag feed instead of tube feed. Both Marlins have the same action. Found I liked the mag feed better as the model 60 tube feed was a pain loading and unloading. And did I mention inexpensive. Half the price of the 1022. You have to spend a bunch of money on a 1022 to make it as accurate as the Marlins out of the box. So ,if you're asking me, you know the answer. My Model 795 is blue but I also want a Stainless one. The 795 is also more compact than the 60 but my Marlin Papoose is even more compact and light and accurate too. Get the Marlin.

That is great information and I appreciate your time and response! I am becoming sold on the Marlin and your feedback is tipping the scale. Thank-you!

I'm also a fan of the 795.

underappreciated gen.

think the u.s. has an 'appleseed LTR' edition which has better sights than the std model... rather than upgrading the sights later...

guess ill go against the grain with the others.

i like my 10/22's.
they hit what im aiming at and they go bang every time i squeeze the trigger.

you can upgrade them with pretty much anything you can imagine or do nothing to them.
personally i prefer to get a gun that has after market stuff available to it if i should choose to play around with it, and i do tend to like to do that.

I started with the marlin nothing bad to say but the trigger was a little heavy but so is the ruger. I sold it to get a used 10/22 which i put all the bells and whistles on. I then got another ruger for my wife to shoot and really liked the 25 round mags and loader. After a while i found mine was good and accurate but liked carrying hers in the field better since it was more or less stock. I ended up selling my modded gun in the end which i broke even on, picked up another wood stock and we shared the gun. Couple years go by and i picked up an international model for me which i upgraded with apreture sights and also upgraded hers with firesights and a picatiny rail with 4-12 scope and did some trigger work. I also picked up some spare 10 rounders. I dont shoot as much as i used to only a hundred rounds or so per trip and the accuracy is about 1/2" at 50 yrds which is good enough for me. The marlin is a good gun and accuracy is a little better but i like the custom add ons of the ruger.

Just thought of this with the 60 no box mags to load, tubes go pretty quick when you get used to them

I've never had a Marlin, but have had a 10/22 as my plinker for a while. FWIW, it was always there, always went bang when it was supposed to; not always the #1 go to gun, so many others have come and gone. Then I stumbled across an "upgrade kit", the "Chicago Conversion" made by Fun Guns in the US. I already had the GSG rotary mag, so this was just a natural upgrade to dressup the old girl.

Now this is one of my favorites, definitely makes people stop and have a look when I open the case and pull her out, at the range. Not the most accurate, but then you only need minute of 110 rounds. :)

i hope to god you put forth the extra effort and your 'gun case' for this gun is a violin case???

LOL! It's on the way!! It would be just so wrong to take a lady out without the proper "accessories", for her outfit. It would be like buying her a new dress.......without the shoes, purse, etc. that go with it. And who said guns were cheaper than women? But, guns are so much safer!

I have both, the 1022 wears tech sights and the 795 is scoped. Both run great provided theyre fed a diet of quality ammo. The marlin is the more accurate gun for sure, but for popping grouse in the head out to 50 meters both work great. My 1022 with a power custom hammer and torsion bar return spring mod has a much nicer trigger, but a few spring mods in the 705 and its trigger isnt too shabby either. Its a draw for me, if the marlin wasnt so dainty id probably take it out more. Im pretty back and forth as too which comes out to play.

I beg to differ with anyone that dismisses all 10/22's as inaccurate. This is 5 rounds of CCI Standard at 50 yards from my target model, purchased new about 3 years ago. I cut the barrel to 18.5", recrowned it,and did a bit of trigger work, but didn't spend a dime on parts. This is my best group ever with it, but the rifle is much more accurate than I am.

I've got another one with a slightly floppy Butler Creek folding stock, recrowned factory sporter barrel, the factory trigger from my target model, and a cheap Crosman red dot that will do similar groups at 20-25 yards if I have a decent rest and take my time.

I've owned about 8 10 22s. I've never had a really accurate one other the the dar22, it was very accurate but was finicky sometimes with ammo. I've also owned a few marlins. I didn't play with them too seriously because I just never thought to really try some groups. I sold them too. I missed having a stainless semi I could bang around in the bush with so I started buying again. I've put tech sights (same as the appleseed model has) on both types. I ended up keeping a 1022 takedown just for the sheer usefulness of it. It still wears the tech sights. I still felt I needed better accuracy for head shots on small game. So I found a used marlin 60scf. It shot very well with the 525 bulk packs of blazer that was available by the case at the time. So I picked up a couple cases and it still surprises me every time I shoot it. The holes are normally touching. I picked up another 795ss also and it is great too. Both smoke the 1022 takedown and any other 1022 I've ever owned or put together except for the dar. They are close though, and with cheaper ammo. I hated the triggers on the Marlins though, then a friend on here told me about mcarbo spring kit. I ordered a couple and that made the Marlins even better. Check out the marlin 60 ss if you want a nice stock, put in the 28 dollar spring kit and never look back.

I've seen comments like "the 10/22 is like the Chevy 350 of the gun world". Lots of customization options, but as common as it gets. It seems like the Marlin 60 (SS) is that good out of the box "something different" option. 10/22 still a great choice too and a whole world of options. Thank-you all for your feedback on this!
