Ruger 10/22 or Pietta PPS-50?

Hi all,

So I'm wanting to get a first gun soon. Because cost is one of the primary considerations atm (still have student loans to throw money at) it's definitely going to be a 22. While I like the SW M&P 15-22 the fact that its restricted puts a bit of a downer on it. While I'm not looking to do any hunting I would like the ability to go out plinking on properties of friends (where allowed by them & bylaws).

So really I'm between a Pietta PPS-50 (this one: https://www.marstar.ca/dynamic/product.jsp?productid=85760) or a Ruger 10/22 done up in a similar manner (including a drum mag, bipod, foregrip, etc..).

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

p.s. Whilst everyone is looking at this , I do actually have another question, I noticed marstar does the pps-50 in a scoped variant and the above red dot variant. Which ought I get? I'm leaning towards red dot (especially since I'm just starting out and as its for plinking & target?)

The 10/22.

It allows you to customize it however you want, and you can change it later if you are not happy. Also has widely available parts like trigger groups and barrels so you can make it a very accurate gun with some work. Probably not an option for the PPS.

The 10/22 is a grwat platform if you are planning mods and will generally shoot any ammo available. I had a PPS50 and it was a ton of fun and much easier to strip and clean, but, it would not feed truncated cone ammo reliably. Don't think you can go wrong with either for the money, just your personal pref.

If you can only have one the 10/22 is your only option... Both are "fun", but the PPs can be finicky and there are less aftermarket improvements to help address any feed/ejection issues.

Thanks for the great responses guys!

Any thoughts as to whether the rifle (now leaning to 10/22...though we'll see what I pull the trigger on [harharhar]) ought to be scoped or rather with a red dot?

For the price of the PPS50 and what you get. Its not worth it. I followed what they recommended for ammo and I was un reliable. I think its only a 200$ gun in my mind.

i have a pps, here are the cons:

parts. 10/22 stuff everywhere. pps has a couple stocks and a couple mags, thats it.
the pps open sights SUCK.

here are the pros;
in my opinion, its the most stylin 22 out of the box.
comes with 30rd mag or 50rd drum.
its shorter than 10/22, 702, 597, etc

but dont overlook the 702. for $169 or whatever they go for... my wife has one, and it has given absolutely ZERO issues, it runs whatever ammo we feed it, theres 25rd mags available for it.

you will probably enjoy a 22semi for a bit, but i would guess that a year from now it will not be getting much use. i take my 22 bolt to the range every time i go, and leave my pps50 at home.

i would almost say just grab a 702 (cheapest gun available, and works flawlessly) to get the .22lr semi itch scratched, and save your money for a nice .22lr bolt action, which will probably be what you end up spending your time on anyway.

For the scope, i've got a Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 sitting on my 10/22 for accuracy, and for general plinking i take it off for either iron sights, or I have a cheap red dot I got off amazon, (DB Power Holographic sight) i'd recommend both

Isn't the plinkster the one where the 25 rounds mags were magically converted to prohib?

I am seeing too much about anything over 10 rds for a 10/22 may be a problem because of "compatiblity" with the charger. That's why if it was just a fun gun with no mods, I'd take the PPs because of the 50rd drums and no "compatablity" issues.

I have one with a scope and one with a red dot. Scope is much more accurate no comparison really. depends on what type of shooting you want to do.

Don`t worry about hi cap mags for the 10 22 they are readily available butler creek 25 rd steel lips function very well its just the bx25 ruger ones that you can`t get here.

Yes, Definitely the Ruger 10/22. They have a model with a 16inch barrel as well. & some come with threaded barrels. As for Quality Ammo- I guess Buck o' Bullets isnt that good eh? What about Thunderbolt? Is that any better? Just found lots of that. I keep hearing all about this Shortage of .22. but I call B.S. I find buckets or bricks when ever I go shopping.

Hello! 10/22 would be my choice. Just be prepared to have a difficult time finding ammo. Not impossible, just difficult (for quality stuff).

Everytime I goto the range and theyre doing a orientation, a friend has his ruger krinker plinker out as a testing gun and a bucket of bullets and it runs fine, someone also had a Rem 597 offered to trade equal about of Fed for the bucket since his rem liked it.

I shoot everything from CCI blazer, T22, Dynapoints, M22 and Ruger chews all.
