Ruger 10/22 or remington 597

Out of the box a rem 597 CAN be more accurate than the 1022 but not always. My 597 is a good shooter now but when new the problems were:
Burr on the crown
Rust in the bore
Dent on the breach from being dry fired as a display model
Iron sights not installed straight
No bluing under front sight base
Guide rods over tightened
Rough trigger pull
Plastic flashing in the barrel channel

I have since reamed,peened,sanded,polished,torqued,scoped, all the defects out and am quite pleased.....she doesn't like truncated ammo or 'Dyna point' ammo though...I'm ok with that however.
 
buy one of each they are both great guns. keep your favourite and sell the other there is two of you.
i have the 597 and since the vq extractor and hammer it has been 100% initially bought because it fit out of the box unlike the little rugger its cheaper and has better accuracy.
 
I had both, my Rem 597 is now sold. I really enjoyed it and it ran like a top but I like the availability of aftermarket parts for the 10/22.

Both good shooting, reliable semi's.

But now I own a 10/22, and have sold the 597.

My vote.
 
My 597 out of the box was a piece of ####. Many thousands of rounds later, some modifications to the stock and trigger assembly (stock trigger), no cleaning of the barrel for 2000+ rounds and the gun is finally shooting relatively decent at 25-30 yards. The way it should have when I bought it. The LoP is a little too short for my liking, especially with tendonitis in the elbow.

The 30 round mags suck for loading after 20 rounds.

My SR-22 is still pretty new to me with only one trip to the range, so I can't really comment on it too much yet... But so far, I like it much better over the 597.
 
I have a fairly new ruger sr-22.

I really like the feel of the gun and whatnot, but the ruger doesnt impress me at all. Mine seems ok, but it seems like many rugers are picky what kind of ammo they eat, and they always seem to require aftermarket parts to get em "up to par"

That being said, Ive never experienced a 597, and I dont hate my ruger, but I definately wasnt super impressed with the ruger. Its just OK (with a high price tag!)
 
I have both the Rem 597 and the 10/22. My observations- the rem is good to go if you check the guide rails and make sure they are not over tightened. I have not had any stoppages or malfunctions with it. The 10/22 not a bad rifle, actually like the abundance of aftermarket accessories available and this is it's major advantage over the Rem 597. The 25 rd mags for the 10/22 need work IOT make then work properly, but it is possible to get good ones. The Rem 30 rd mags are good to go right off the bat, from my experience. Rem 597 more for me and the 10/22 more for the wife and 2 daughters to use. My experience only, yours may vary.

Try it yes, but dont get rid of the Ruger. I bought a 597vtr last year, yes it looks cool and works good most of the time, it is a pain in the arse to take apart to clean (I am army so I naturally go forensic with my rifles after I use them.) I have also heard that the general build of a ruger is better than the 597 platform. From my experience my 597 is pretty decent, its worth what I paid but I cannot give it more than a 7.5/10.

Also, from what I see 10-22 are easier to upgrade and have more available. I am not that familiar with them but I would love to get my hands on a ruger with one of the crazy fancy wood stocks....blue or another colour...all stainless....

Im not in a hurry to get rid of my 597 but if it gets me closer to my 10-22 I would probably let it go to the right person.

With 30 round mags I find I get a fair bit of stoppages. Whats your experience on it?
 
Nearly a split decision,but we all understand what happens when we leave things to the judges.Try them out for yourself.Way more fun also.I have the Remington,but don't use it a lot!
 
with the 30 rd mag I've found that they need a little sanding to make them drop free and more reliable. if its hard to pull out its hard to put in and may not be seated properly.
