If my PAL ever shows up I'd like to make one of these but I have a couple questions:

I notice that the Ruger 10/22 Targets seem to have a barrel with a bigger outter circumfrance is this true? The picture above seems to be of a standard 10/22 (hence the iron sights).

Another question is do the iron sights on the normal 10/22's come off? This is no big deal as I like the looks of the 10/22 without them but don't want to spend the extra money for a target and then have to mod the stock.

Another question is can you get "flash hiders" for 10/22's and if so how are they installed? How much work is required?

I've heard that the stock above requires usually no work to fit, just drop in and go, anyone have one of these stocks and can give me the heads up?

And finally if anyone is wondering why I was to go with the stock above, I like the looks and figure it will also cut down on weight. (granted it may look silly to some people but Im the one that counts :D)

the 10/22 target models have a "heavy" barrel. yes, it is larger/thicker than the standard barrel. this prevents the barrel from heating up during prolonged target shooting and affecting the accuracy.

the sights do come off, but there will always be the little groove where they go. it's the system they have. your best bet is to buy an afftermarket barrel if you don't want sights on it.

you can get just about anything for a 10/22. flash hiders are one of them. i don't know how much work is required, but i believe you will need a gunsmith to do the job, since it involves threading on the end of the barrel. (someone correct me if i'm wrong).

the large majority of aftermarket stocks are drop in. i doubt you'd have a problem, though i've never used that stock.

yup, you're the one that counts. personally, it's not to my taste, but if it floats your boat, go for it. just a FYI, there's not much weight to a 10/22 to cut down on.

Thanks for the comments. The main reason I want to switch the stocks is for that "pistol grip" as I believe I can shoot a little better using them. If there are other stocks someone can suggest then I'd certainly look into them but for the price of the SVD stock, at the moment it just can't be beat :D

check out Boyds stocks for the nice wood thumbhole stocks.

also fabsports.ca will have some stocks you may be interested in. they carry a more tactical lineup

i'm sure others will chime in with some other manufacturers

Fabsports is where I got the idea for the SVD stock sicne it was also half the price of any other stock Fabsports had.

I like the looks of the Evolution stock but at $269 you still need to purchase a buttstock for another $100-$300 plus the parts to fit that buttstock on.

As much as I'd like to do that, Id like just to run the cheap way for now. :D

while the ergonomics of the stock are important for good shooting and you may ahve done this already the best and cheapest step with the 10-22 is to replace the hammer-sear combo with an aftermarket one from Volquartsen or Power Custom. This alone will cut out about 2/3's of the weight and grittiness of the trigger pull and will result - for everybody I've talked to that's done it , anyways - in a huge inporvement in shooting accuracy.

You can get ones that just slip over the end of the barrels and are screwed tight. Both the threaded and slip on ones are only good for the LCF on a .22

For a similar look of the ATI stock your looking at is a Choate one. Available in both standard and bull barrels.

There is also the Choate folding stock, the Butler Creek Folder(I use one), Tapco stocks(tacticool) and Hogue stocks. Those are just some of the stock out there, all of these are under $100 usually.

When you get your PAL, head out to the nearest gunshow and get your hands on a 10/22 reciever or even the whole thing...I've seen them as low as $150 for the whole meal deal...Then you have something to start playing with and building up.

Gun shows are pretty far and between around here. There is (if I remember correctly) only one a year in PG which is about a 7 hour round trip.
