Hey guys, i am not new to shooting but am very new to scopes. All i ever shoot or shot was open sight, and i like it this way. I recently got my girlfriend into shooting and i bought her a ruger 10/22 from sfrc ammo. She likes shooting with scopes, and i do not even know where to start with this.

If someone could provide me info on what rings to buy that are compatible with 10/22 top it would be helpfull. as for scope i am guessing that any rimfire scope will do the job. have searched google on for scope rings and info seems a bit confusing.

There should be a weaver base with your ruger that screws to the top of the receiver. Use blue loktite for that.
Before you buy weaver style rings, choose the scope.
Some like a red dot, I prefer a 6x fixed scope. A 4x works very well if you don't shoot past 50 yds. So, a cheap 4x will cost around 50. The one from brandonoptics in vancouver works very well, their 2-7 is pretty good too.

If you're shooting paper and longer range, a 3-9 or 4-12 will work better.

Everyone has their preferences, I like vortex and generally everything but BSA.

Finally for rings, don't cheap out. I liKe burris zee rings with inserts.
The main thing is to choose a light weight scope only.

Just go buy a bushnell 22 scope. It comes with rings that fit the ruger and can be had for under 40 bucks retail.

This would not be my advice. Low end Bushnell's (or any other cheapo scope) are complete crap. I have had them and the reticles flop around after a few hundred rounds. At least spend $200 on a Bushnell, Redfield, Nikon, Vortex etc. and you will have years of fun. If you go totally cheap, don't be surprized when your sh1t sandwich tastes like sh1t...

^^ What he said. Redfield Revolution is your best bet for glass along with a set of steel scope rings from Leupold or Burris.

Its a freaking 10/22. You going gopher hunting or to the Olympics for target shooting. if its the later, you may want to trade your 10/22 on something with a bolt... Lol, a $300 scope and $50 rings on a $200 plinking gun.:) spend 50 bucks on the bushnell and blow $300 ammo for the next 10 years of plinking. A 10/22 should eat anything.

I've had a Bushnell Sportview 4X (cheap as they get) on my 10/22 for years and am completely satisfied with its performance. Just stay away from the narrow tube .22 scopes.

I had 2 cheap Bushnell's & 1 cheap Tasco on my 10/22 over the years and have given up on cheapo crap scopes. All of them stopped holding zero very soon and eventually ended up with the reticle rattling around inside the tube. A good scope ($199) will last much longer and offer superior performance. I guess if you rarely use the gun, they will last much longer. I put 10's of thousands of rounds through mine. I got tired of shooting with crap optics and then replacing it with crap optics. YMMV

Marty...
You need to get rings that match your scope rail (top?) and the tube size of your scope at the same time.
IF you have a rail on your rifle, do you know what type it is?
90% of the time people use "weaver" rails on a 10/22 but some also use "dove tail" rails.
When you get your scope, you also need to know the "tube" size.
So...If you get a scope with a 1" tube on it and you have a weaver scope rail on your rifle, then you need to purchase 1" rings that accept a weaver rail.
You also need to know the height of your rings required as you can get "low", "medium" and "high" (or see through, off set etc)
This decision mostly depends on the size of your bell on the scope.
Understand? :D

Thank you for the info. I will check my 10/22 once it gets in. A stock 300$ rifle should be comming with a dove tail rail. I will post pics of top once it gets in and make sure i do order the right scope/rings combo.

I am going to cheap out here, as this will be the girlfriends begginner rifle. Myself am plinking the sh!t out of my svt40, got surplus ammo at sfrc and cannot beleive how accurate it is. If work does slow down tough, i will always have the 22 plinker for economy shooting.

No prob. Marty
Post the pics when you get the 10/22 and I'll help you out with getting the right stuff. ;)

Rifle just came in, is this what they call a weaver rail?

Would this be an example of what i should get ( given that the scope is 1" diameter where mounted )

You actually have a dual mount rail.
The very top (thinner) groove is a Dove Tail and the lower (wider) one is a Weaver.
Yes....those rings will work with a 1" scope tube.
Good luck and show us a pic of your rifle when you get your glass on!! :D

Thank you wham-o for confirming this! My glass will be cheap tough (100$ range)
I was wondering, would you secure the rail screws that tight rail to rifle with a drop of blue lock tite?

Alright scope is on. Rings ended up higher than expected but oh well. The important thing is that i can set myself comfortably, and have a nice image.
