Hey,

I've been looking for a while and can't seem to find a clear answer to whether or not I can CUT my 10/22 barrel down. I know you can obviously buy barrels shorter then 18.5" and remain NR, but if I cut my 16.5" stock 10/22 barrel down to say 12" (obviously still maintaining the OAL of 26" or more) is this legal or not. With rifles that came with barrels longer then 18.5" I know you cannot cut them any shorter then that, but if my barrel is already shorter then 18" I understand you can install shorter barrels, but is it okay for me to trim it down myself? I just need to know before I go and cut my barrel and turn my gun into a prohib, or if I need to go and find a "legal" short barrel for my gun.

Thanks for the help.

No you can not cut it shorter then 18.5. It has to be manufactured shorter.

Well that settles that, good thing I didn't waste a barrel by cutting it down. Thanks for the clarification, anyone got shirt barrels they want to sell? Haha

I have an 8" 1022 and its probably the most carried of all my 22s. Its the dlask bull stainless one and shoots really well. I've never scoped it but its amazing how well the open sights work with it.

Aaron,

Im lookimg to build a short barreled 1022. What sights are you using?

Im curious if anyone sells a 12" sighted barrel for the 1022, anyone have any ideas?

I wish someone did sell a taper/factory contour 8-12 inch sighted barrel with a factory/sporter chamber. Would be nice to build an ultra short ultra reliable plinker that doesn't weigh a ton. dlask and nea are you listening!?

Yeah it's really too bad that you have to go with a big heavy bull barrel if you want to go shorter. I was looking at the Dlask barrels and just machining it down, would this work? I have access to all the proper machinery if it wouldn't affect the barrel in a negative way.

I got a reply from Joe at Dlask and he said they may do a 12 inch sporter barrel with sights next year. I would just love that in Dlask quality. It would be huge. Anyone agree? We should show him some support!!

I used the dlask 8" stainless bull with the dovetail adaptor and tech sights(I had to drill out the rear sight a bit bigger so it would work with the shorter sight radius) on a ruger receiver, a brimestone trigger group, kidd bolt and a factory ruger synthetic stock(I couldn't make up my mind so I started with this). I was going to have a sporter stainless 10" made also I think for the next one. Just a great little rifle :)

Put my name down for one, that would be fantastic.

Personally, I would want one of the Dlask 8" bull (non-tapered) barrels tapped for a Ghost ring peep (maybe NDS)and a Williams Fire Sight Ramp... The NDS is 0.530" from barrel surface to center peep and there is a 0.540" ramp.. A couple passes on the base with a curved file and you have a perfect set-up on a non tapered barrel... With the DAR22 receiver (flat top) and a stock the get's the OAL to a "smidge" over 26"... SWEET!
