Thanks to CGN member wayupnorth and this thread: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1499754-Heads-up!-good-deal-to-be-had-on-Ruger-10-22-Take-Down! I recently picked up a 10/22 TD that was on sale at WSS for $150 off.

I have been wanting to play with and modify a 10/22 TD for a while now. I was planning to make this the first 10/22, that i purchased new, to be fired in stock form, before any modifications. However, after dry firing it a few times I quickly abandoned that idea. The stock trigger pull and horrible bolt hold open operation had me removing the stock trigger group in short order. Of course, while I had it apart I also removed the stock steel buffer pin. So I had it reassembled with a delrin buffer and a Kidd single stage trigger robbed from another rifle. Now the stock Ruger bolt was catching on the Kidd hammer and was very hard to cycle...out comes the bolt and charging handle. In goes a polished and radiused Ruger Bolt with Volquartsen extractor and Kidd charging handle and spring...so much for keeping it stock. Now it has a great crisp 1.5 lb trigger and proper bolt hold open and it cycles smoothly.

The bolt that came with this rifle is interesting. It seems that all the rough surfaces are covered in a brown rust patina. I have never seen that before on a Ruger bolt:

Also it looks like the barrel band was assembled with a butter knife - note the damaged screw head:

My immediate modification plans include a Magpul stock:
GetImage.ashx
and short Adaptive Tactical barrel:

(both on order from IRG) and probably a red dot.

Later I would like to add a second longer target barrel and scope, this Volquartsen would be my first choice, but is rather expensive:

Since I plan to have 2 or 3 different barrels to interchange, I will be needing additional Ruger TD barrel catch hardware:

Does anyone know where to purchase these in Canada or a US source that will ship to Canada? I have only found them on eBay.com ($49) so far and this supplier cannot ship to Canada.

Please feel free to post your own modified 10/22 TD info and pictures here...
Cheers
TEG

holy hell you cant blame all that on me!

haha!

i have been sitting on my hands with my new Ruger Take Down.
i sooooooooooo badly want to take it apart and mod the bolt catch, polish the bolt and hammer and seer and and and and.....

but i cant, i promised myself i wouldnt do anything to mine until after i did my comparing to the other take down rifles in that little competition im doing.
*sigh*
so ill live vicariously through you as you play with yours!

on a related note, my bolt in my TD is the EXACT same as yours with that ruff patina like feel to it.
also, on 1 of the 2 Ruger SR22's that made it into my house this week 1 of those bolts was the same way.
thankfully on the SR22 i could rip it apart and play with it and it took all of 2 minutes to clean the bolt up with some 1500 grip wet and then buff it on the wheel and it was running smooth and sparkly!

initially i had thought of ordering up a Dlask bolt as i havnt yet picked one of those up yet and putting it in so i could see how well made they are.
i may still....

Not blaming you for all the mods :) , just giving you credit for pointing out a great deal!!!

I have never tried the Dlask bolts (they look very similar to the Kidd bolts) but have several Kidd bolts. I find the Kidd bolts to be too tight in some receivers. The polished and radiused bolt I put in the TD was actually modified by Dlask before they built their own. I honestly think that I would stick to a modified Ruger bolt in anything except a high end benchrest gun with a Dlask or Kidd receiver.

I shot the 10/22TD today in a friends backyard. The rifle functioned flawlessly, but unfortunately my eyes no longer function with iron sights. I recall how accurate I used to be with my old Cooey Model 39 and iron sights - those days are long gone. I think I may have a Simmons 3-9x laying around somewhere that I will throw on for the next range trip.

im in the same boat.
the older i get the more scopes my guns get.
and the ones that have scopes keep getting bigger scopes!

i had been looking around for a compact scope to put on my TD and i think i found a neat little one to try out.

Where were you planning on buying that scope and about how much are they?

Thanks

They are usually available direct from China for about $50 USD. I owned one very briefly - they pack a lot of features into a compact scope. Optical quality is exactly what you would expect from a $50 scope. Sometimes they are marked UTG and sometimes Leapers

Here is one for $38USD + shipping (cut and paste, then remove space ht_tps..):

Is this the "you laugh you lose" thread, b/c I just lost.

Great ideas TEG. That adaptive tactical bbl is news to me.

If you are willing to wait, months perhaps, I could help with the bbl catch hardware as I'm planning a trip to NY in late Jan and will be importing some non-ITAR parts.

Hey... I just said I was planning to fire it in stock form (ie: once) I didn't mean to imply it was going to stay that way :)

Thanks for your offer of help gcd, I will send you a pm.

I really like the look of that short takedown barrel. Once I get things smoothed out in the action I will definitely be pursuing a replacement barrel that will get me lined up better.

I put a spare Simmons 3-9x scope, on the TD today just to see what kind of accuracy potential the stock barrel has. As expected it sprayed bulk ammo in shotgun pattern groups (roughly 2.0-3.0 inch groups at 50 yards) this was with CCI Mini-Mag and Fed Auto Match. The CCI was the more accurate of the two. Then I decided to try a few 5 round groups at 50 yards using some SK Rifle Match ammo. I got a few 1.0-1.5" +/- groups and then a 0.5" group, this was while shooting into the sun with a cheap 9x scope and dealing with a lot of glare and white out, so I am optimistic that in better lighting and with a better scope this barrel has some fairly decent accuracy potential. I intend to install the Magpul backpacker optics mount on this barrel for a compact, long eye relief, scope.

New parts arrived

My Magpul stock and Adaptive Tactical TacHammer Charger barrel arrived today from IRG :

O/A length with the Charger barrel is 27 3/4" in the current configuration. The modified Ruger fore end is temporary until something better comes along or until I get more ambitious and make a shorter fore end to match the Magpul stock. This barrel will probably end up with a compact scope or a red dot, the Simmons 3-9x is just for testing at 50 yards to compare potential accuracy to the the stock Ruger barrel.

Here is a typical 50 yd, 5 shot group using the stock Ruger barrel & Simmons scope. I am very interested to see if the AT Charger barrel can do better (to be updated Feb 26 with any luck):

Range report for Adaptive Tactical Charger TD barrel

I went to elimsprints backyard range today, conditions were less than idea with light snow and fog. I started at 25 yds and slowly made my way to 50 yards as the fog lifted. I found it very challenging with this short light barrel and 3-9x scope to shoot decent 50 yard groups. Of the different brands of ammo tried: MiniMag (100 rds) SK Rifle Match (50 rds) Eley Team (20 rounds) RWS (20 rounds) the SKRM was the most accurate. Function was exceptional for a brand new Bentz chamber barrel, just one stovepipe with the RWS and no other failures with any other types of ammo. I tried a few very rapid fire, standing unsupported, 10 round blasts at a fire extinguisher at 85 yards (with MiniMags) and was very pleased, I basically couldn't miss and the rifle functioned flawlessly.

I shot a total of 15 of these Del Selin Targets, at various ranges, here are the best 2 of the day at 50 yards:

This barrel definitely has potential for greater accuracy than shown above, as I was struggling to find a technique that worked for this rifle/barrel combo from the bench at 50 yds.
