Ruger 10/22 Takedown Build Thread

Another Range Report

Since my last range session, I have installed a brand new VQ extractor (the bolt and old extractor have probably seen at least 5000 rounds in other rifles), cleaned the majority of crud from the receiver and applied a heavy amount of lube.

Today I ran 80 rounds through the VQ barrel (40 Federal 525 bulk, 20 Federal AE & 20 Federal Auto Match). I was just shooting steel for function testing, not shooting groups. Reliability was 100%.

Then I started shooting the same 3 types of ammo with the AT barrel while running some steel challenge practice sessions. At first i was carefully loading one type of ammo per mag, but eventually the mags were getting a mix of all 3 ammo types. I did not count, but I must have run about 200 rounds. Reliability was 100%

I think I have finally gotten everything running just right and can switch barrels with no reliability issues. The rifle does seem to like to be run with the action fairly clean and very well lubricated. I'm calling this a success :)

Hey TomEGun long time bro! probably years? ... I see you are still tinkering (understatement of the year) with 22lr builds... she's a beauty
Welcome back LM it has been a while.

Why this statement may I ask? What is wrong with a receiver mounted optic? Holding Zero?
Is this why?

Yes, since I have multiple interchangeable barrels, it makes more sense, to me, to have a seperate optic that will hold zero and has been zeroed for that barrel. Kind of like having multiple uppers on an AR15, each has its own dedicated optic/sights.

Cantilever TD Barrel Comparison

I noticed recently that Adaptive Tactical has changed the design of the cantilevered rail on their TD barrels. The older style AT rail was quite flexible and seemed to be mounted too far forward on the barrel to me. While I was very impressed with the reliability and accuracy of my AT Charger barrel with the old style rail, I ended up cutting the rail to use a red dot, since the full length rail was just not that useful because of the excessive flex when a medium or large scope was mounted. Here is a comparison of the old and new rail styles:

Old Adaptive Tactical cantilever rail style:

New Adaptive Tactical cantilever rail style:

Note how the new style AT rail is mounted further back on the barrel (closer to the receiver) than the old style AT rail. It is much stiffer and does not seem to have any flex. However the new rail has some draw backs; it appears to be wider, deeper and lower which probably helps with stiffness but it now interferes with the charging handle. I had to file about 1.5mm off the top of my Kidd charging handle to be able to install the barrel.

This photo shows the bright area on the top of the charging handle where I had to file it:

This photo shows the clearance issue as the barrel is installed:

The clearance issues don't stop there, here you can see that the scope ring has to be mounted forward of the charging handle, unless you intend to remove the scope every time you want to remove the barrel, this makes the rearmost 1" +/- of the rail useless:

Here are a couple of photos comparing the new style AT cantilever rail with the Volquartsen cantilever rail, note the difference in length:

The shorter VQ rail does not interfere with the charging handle:

I have not had a chance to shoot the new AT barrel yet, but will report back with a comparison to the Volquartsen barrel as soon as I can.

I purchased a complete 10/22 TD, minus the receiver, from the EE. I sold all the parts except the TD catch assembly for the first AT barrel.
I recently stole the TD catch assembly from my Ruger barrel for the newest AT TD barrel - I'm undecided if I want to keep the Ruger barrel, I may try to sell it without hardware.

Thanks danny1444. No, the factory .920" barrel uses a receiver mounted scope rail which is of no use or interest to me.

I am currently sourcing a VQ Cantilever mount and will install on my factory Ruger TD 21133 .920 barrel. If it does not work as well as I want I am going to machine my own cantilever mount based your pics and information which was very helpful by the way. Cheers.

Cool. Let me know if you need any dimensions. Brownells sells a rail blank that could be useful:

That is interesting. Was looking for something like this the other day but did not spend too much time looking. Rigidity is key here so based on your experience, what is your opinion on modifying the above part vs modifying a VQ mount. Thanks.

I think either rail could be just as rigid. Obviously a minor modification (if any mods are required at all) to an existing rail would be far simpler. I believe Adaptive Tactical also sells their rails separately ($60 US) if VQ does not:

What lengths of Adaptive Tactical barrels did you play with? I'm trying to decide on the 9" or the 16", and decide if I go with one with or without a rail. I currently have a SS 10/22 TD in the Magpul backpacker stock, but I'm thinking about making it even shorter and more handy.

I have both lengths of Adaptive Tactical TD barrel. I am still experimenting with the 16" barrel to find which ammo it likes best. The Charger barrel is very accurate with SK Rifle Match.

So has anyone here figured out a source for these? I'm to busy these days to check the EE 10 times a day anymore lol

My experience with the 9" AdTac barrel is similar to Tom E
Very accurate and not particularly picky on ammo. Chamber is cut just to my liking as well...no problems chambering or extracting bulk ammo.

I shot the 10/22TD today in a friends backyard. The rifle functioned flawlessly, but unfortunately my eyes no longer function with iron sights. I recall how accurate I used to be with my old Cooey Model 39 and iron sights - those days are long gone...

Have you tried these?
