Hi!

My Ruger 10/22 is in a Magpul backpacker stock with a short barrel and a red dot mounted on the barrel. It's a really funny plinking tool but i now want a second forend to make it a more versatile hunting gun and allow more precise shots. I'm planning to get a 16" barrel (complete assembly since nobody in Canada sell the latch/takedown mecanism yet...) and i've noticed Magpul now sell TD Hunter X22 and Backpacker forend alone. (which is a great idea!). Since my backpacker have a front red dot mount, i'll use a QD scope base and something like a 4x scope when needed. The longer forend and scope assembly will stay in the backpack when not used, but the short forend will nest in the stock when not in use.

Looking at the specs of the forend, it's look like the Hunter X22 forend is bigger (and longer for sure...) than the Backpacker forend so i was wondering if the X22 would fit the backpacker stock and how it would looks... if anybody got the two forends and can put some pics it will make my choice easier!

I already have a "standard 10/22" customized for precision shooting... i just want to have a "complete all-in-one toy" for plinking days. I know it would be cheaper to just buy another complete takedown... but you know.. 10/22 are a funny money pit!!!

Thanks! I'll post pictures asap!

Good idea, Snapshots the Ruger warranty people, sold me a mechanism a few months ago after I picked up a 16" used barrel on the E.E. with now latch.

Is the magpul backpacker setup workable for a conventional scope mount? Or are you looking at an extended eye relief scope? Or did I miss something?

I'm interested because I'm looking at something similar for my 10/22 TD - although it's staying in the Ruger stock and I'm replacing the fore-grip with a Midwest Industries MLOK handguard with the intention of being able to mount a scout scope to the top of it.

My first idea was to mount a scout scope on the top of a Midwest 13" handguard, but the forend alone is more than 200$, Magpul sell the forend aroun 50$ so with the Magpul forend, i'm planing a "quick detach" scope mount on the top of the receiver with a standard 4x scope. I'll probably loose some accuracy after installation but i think it will be good enough for basic stuff, a quick zeroing and it's good to go!

AH! Now I understand. That make sense.

For me, given that I would need to purchase the whole stock as well as the optics mount, it's similar in price to the Midwest handguard....and because I prefer a scout scope to a conventional scope for a light and handy .22, it seems to be a reasonable choice. I guess we'll see once the handguard gets here and I see whether or not this has the scope as close to the bore as I would like it to be. The truth is that I'm more than a bit picky when it comes to the way an optic works with the rest of the rifle when it comes to scout scopes.
