Ruger 10/22 used in combat in Israel.

.22 has killed at about a mile: rook shooting in the UK and a slug came down at an extreme angle and hit the victim in the head as he sat on a fence.

I heard some other Country's in Eastern Europe were sniping Russian invaders with them also. They were punching holes in there heads from 100 yards away, with 10/22's. Everyone laughs at the power of a .22 compared to other rifles, but I still don't think it would feel to good to get hit upside the head with one. Ever see the Movie "Shooter" with Mark Wahlberg sniping the kidnappers from a Canoe.

Silenced .22's were a favorite for urban snipers in the balkans during the recent uglyness. That article kinda sickens me a bit though, as the stated use is for un-armed civilians. No surprise that it's effective when you're shooting at soft (read: dogs, kids, women and angry men protesting) "targets".

Well I doubt if there were many, if any, Ruger 10/22s used by Chechen fighters in the battle for Grozny. (maybe in the Balkans) But 22 rifles were used to shoot Russian soldiers during urban fighting in Chechnya. Apparently patient snipers waited for the opportunity to shoot at any exposed flesh of enemy combatants. The Chechyan street fighters used plastic pop bottles to help lessen the report from the rifle muzzles.
The Russians invaded there twice, once in 1994 (not a good one for Russian conscripts) and again in 1999.
(someone in the Kremlin, decided it would be done better this go-around)
It was said even a Russian general of the Interior Ministry fell prey to a .22 rimfire bullet. No doubt delivered by a sneaky Chechyan shooter who successfully smuggled a compact 22 weapon through several security checkpoints & roadblocks to do the dirty deed.
This happened while he was delivering an outdoor speech to regional officers.

I wonder about the ammunition, as lead bullets are illegal under the Geneva Convention.
From Winchester:
"Winchester announces lead free .22LR and .22 Magnum and .223
It is lead free day here at The Firearm Blog*, this being the second lead-free ammo post!

Winchester has announced a new line of lead-free ammunition.

CCI currently manufactures lead free .22 Magnum called TNT GREEN but as far as I know Winchester are the first US manufacturer to announce lead free .22 LR. It is rumored that more companies will unveil their lead free rimfire at SHOT 2009.

The new Winchester SUPER-X .22 Long Rifle will propel a 30 grain THP (tin hollow point) at 1650 fps. This is a hot “hyper velocity” load which generates 181 foot pounds of energy, only slightly less powerful that the CCI Stinger at the muzzle.

It is likely that the case will be extended in length, like the CCI Stringer. The extended case can prevent the round from chambering in some rifles."
Ok then they shoot tin bullets! Actually I believe it's not 'lead' bullets but bullets that expand or flatten easily. Read the 4th sentenceof the link:

So in theory a .22LR shooting high % tin+antimoy in a lead alloy would work or just tin with no HP. In a recent survey 10 out of 10 Palestinians fell down when shot with a 22LR in the knee cap.:p

I remember, at the time I was riding my flying pig in the area. GET REAL!
Go to the Federal website, select some rimfire ammo and view the energy curve.
40gr solids yield under 80ft*lbs at 140yards.
