Hey guys

I am new to shooting and I am looking into getting a .22 but I don't know which to get. I was thinking about the ruger 10/22 or the Remington 597. I really want a semi auto. Would like to hear from people who have experience with both rifles! Hearing it from consumers as opposed to the sales people is awesome. Thanks guys.

If you just want a good semi, and aren't going to tactify it, go 597.
I have both and the 597 makes it out alot more often than the 10/22

Before you get bombarded with replies about the 10/22 , you should also consider a Marlin 795. They are half the price , 4.5 lbs, nice thick barrel, very accurate and reliable.

Yes, I've only heard good things about the 795, while the Ruger is way over-rated, IMO.

Apples vs oranges!!!

The 10/22 is a reliable semi, the Remington is a Jam-O-Matic!!!

Just to qualify, I had 4 x 10/22's of which I still have 2. All operated flawlessly with any ammo and with any Ruger or Butler Creek mags. I have also owned 2 x 597's that I got rid of. The second one was a warranty replacement for the first. Both were jamming continuously with FTF, FTE, FTL etc...

I've had both, still have the ruger. My 597 was a jam-o-matic as well, with all types of ammo. It was returned, and I paid the upgrade to the 10/22, which wasn't really any better until I bought a VQ extractor and polished the working parts of the action- now its reliable. Not accurate though. Now that VQ is making parts for the 597 it might be worth trying to fix too, but of those 2, the ruger wins. I'd probably try a savage 64B ( AKA cooey / lakefield) or marlin if I were to buy a new semi and didn't feel the need for high cap mags and all the other aftermarket goodies.

I have a 597 with the VQ updates rolls right along with my sons 10/22 no JAMS on any cheap .22 ammo

I bought the Remington 597HB (heavy barrel). I purchased an Archangel stock for it, did some trigger clean-up, and I really like it. For those thinking about this model I really did like the factory stock; I wanted to change to an adjustable stock for the kids.

I hope that they have done some fine tuning to this rifle because I will be disappointed if it jams all the time. (It had been test fired I could tell)

So far I have shot about 80 rds trouble free. I have only used the stock 10rnd mag.

FWIW: At our turkey shoot this year it was -20C. None of the Rugers wanted to feed. Not one of the members with Remingtons had issues............hence my purchase.

Rem 597: Quite underestimated & unappreciated rimfire rifle. It could get bit finicky with some kinds of ammo however, most of the times the problem is solved by adjusting 2 guide rail screws which quite often are either too tightened or are left too loose. The Hi-cap Remington magazines (I believe there are no after-market mags) should be fed only 25 although it's called a 30 round mag.

I have a 10/22 and a savage 64b, the savage is more accurate, but the mags. Only go up to 10 rounds and there really isn't any aftermarket stuff for it. The 10/22 hasn't been as reliable but there are lots of aftermarket options if your into that.

the OP knows where my allegiance lies. I've never shown you where I have my Ruger tattoo have I? if you buy a 597 Ryan, you will have to get a Remington tattoo...and you'll have to hide it from my sister haha, the tattoo I mean...

I have 2 597's, they function flawlessly, never had a problem. Hell you can get a heavy barrel 597 for less than a 10/22. I've owned 10/22's as well nothing wrong with them as well, just over priced for what you get IMO. Both my 597's are original, have never needed any aftermarket parts. Over tightened action rods on 597's will cause problems, as long as you can read the owners manual you won't have a problem. As others have said you can get a Marlin 795 stainless with a beefy barrel for less than a standard Ruger. Ruger's are not very accurate, that's why 30rd mags are widely available so you can have a chance at hitting what your shooting at.....LMAO

Well "Ryan", what's it going to be?

Pay special attention to those who are suggesting Marlin (795 and 60). They know something.
