Ruger 10/22 vs Remington 597?

I'm on the market looking for a 22LR to learn proper shooting. I've heard good things about both the Remington 597 and the Ruger 10/22 Carbine, and I'm on a budget.

So which one do you think is the better value? I can get a Ruger for about 230, and a Remington for 160. It seems to me the Remington is a better deal 'cos I can buy a lot of 22LR with the money saved ;)

So what say you?

I have little to no experience shooting, this is a new hobby for me.

I understand they're both excellent rifles, I'm just wondering if there's anything that makes the flaming chicken rifle worth the extra $95.

This sounds like I'm trying to troll or just start a stupid argument. But honestly, I didn't know the 597 vs 10/22 was a thing. Like I said, I'm new. I've heard a lot about the 10/22s, there seems to be a lot of after market parts and everything else for it. I like that you can get it with wood furniture. But I also like that I can buy an extra 2,000 rds of 22LRs if I go with the 597.

So basically the price point is what's winning me over...

Don't let the price make up your mind when the difference is so slight, the rifle will be with you for years to come. Choose exactly what you like best and throw $95 worth of caution to the wind, if that's you preference.
I've made that mistake before, not buying exactly what I wanted, a year later had to take a bigger loss to sell what I bought and buy what I had really wanted the year prior..
for what it's worth :)

Hey I have been a Remington man all my life but when you compare those two rifles I would likely go with the ruger for out of the box reliability.

ALSO: where is your bear defense thread? if you've got a 10/22 vs 597, going to start a 9mm vs 45, why do have a bear defnse to round the group off?

10/22 can be upgraded 100% even timney triggers

597s got a partial bad rap due to bad 1st and second gen 10 round mags. newer versions have improved on this.

trigger on 597 is terrible however, the guide rods need re-tightening/loosening on some. extractor could handle an upgrade.

is this a truck gun? paper puncher? both? training rifle for kids?

training kids rifle?-
597 will also teach them how to keep the muzzle downrange while they clear jams. As well as trigger control as they try to work the 8 pound monstrosity.
 
you'll end up trading the 597- the 10/22 will end up in a far different than stock config- there's a reason why the boys in the chevy challenge chose the 10/22- there's a TRUCK at stake- if they still made the nylon 66, there would be no argument- those darned things just never wear out; so, the question is; do you buy the 10/22 now or later?
 
Marlin Model 60. :D Just got mine today - pulled it out of the box, put on a 20-year-old fourth-hand Tasco 1.75-5x32, grabbed a box of cheap-o Super-X and ran down to the range.

Quarter-sized groups at 50 yards, two quarters at 100. Can't wait to see what it does with better ammo.

The rifle is $10 more than a 597 and $60 less than a 10/22. Three hundred rounds through it, brand new, only had one ejector failure and two misfires, with cheap ammo.

Inexpensive, accurate and reliable out of the box. Plus the tube mag is much more interesting than a box and easier to reload, too.

Haha! Yeah, I did try to search for 557 10/22 threads, but I find UBB searches to be a bit unruly. I'll figure it out eventually.

But yeah, paper puncher. I'm pretty much sold on the 10/22 at this point.

I want to just get used to using sights, practicing, etc before I move on to my bigger rifle. Inherited an SMLE mk4 no1. Bit too expensive to practice on that alone!
 
I have a remington 597, in fact that was my first gun ever! I love it it's very good and accurate, just as accurate as a ruger 10-22, I've shot both many times, in fact just this weekend I shot both. Your as accurate as the shooters ability, on accuracy they are on par i'd say, the difference is maybe 1-2% very minimal (I just made those numbers up just to prove a point :) ) but there is one but, there are more aftermarket parts for the ruger 10-22 and it is a slightly heavier gun if i can remember, but it feels like a better build quality more sturdy, thats where the extra money goes i believe.

In my opinion the remington 597 just feels better in the hand, perhaps because I've gotten so used to it, but it just feels more like a rifle. The ruger 10-22 has better and more aftermarket parts for future upgrades, which you do want room for eventually, Although i like to keep things stock myself. If you want 30-round after market mags, the ruger has better ones and will feed better with less jams, simply because the top lips of the magazines for ruger are made with hard steel, more expensive, but the remingtons 597 30-round mags are all plastic and the top lips eventually crack and break, causing feeding issues.

Both are equally accurate. They shoot exact same groups. Your pick on the choices mentioned above.
 
A guy just brought over a new VTR today as a trade item.
I already have a new 10/22 and haven't fired it, been in the box for years.
Has anyone had any experience with the PRO MAG 50 round drum mag for the 10/22?
 
Promag works well for me, 200 rounds through I've not had a single FTF. Others bad mouth them, but I think that they are confusing them with the Blackdog drum.
