Ruger 10/22 vs Remington 597?

What are the best 10 rd mags for the 597? The plastic one that came with it looks like crap.
I want 25 or 30 round mags for it but would prefer one with steel lips like the Ruger.

I've had exceptionally bad experience with the accuracy and reliability of the 10/22. On the other hand, I've had NOTHING but exceptionally good experiences with the accuracy and reliability of the 597 VTR. Same with the marlin 60. No one will ever convince me that the Ruger is a good firearm. I know better.

The Ruger all the way and with the sr-22 they even made it super accurate in is stock form... JP.

+1 on that. Mine (with no mods to the internals or barrel, just crap that makes it look cool :D) can hit a 8"x8" steel plate at 200yards, shooting off hand, with only my red dot about 20 times out of 25, and I think the 5 that regularly miss are just my bads.

I would buy this if I was in the market for a semi auto 22. If you're set on the Ruger/Remington I'd go with Ruger. Not the cheaper synthetic one though... one of the wood units would be nice.

Are you set on semi auto? Bolt or single shot would probably be a better teacher of shooting form when they force you to take your time. At least thats the case for me... I like the cooey 64 I've been shooting but am looking at a mark 2 to practice my form instead.

If you want to be happy with your purchase go with the 10/22.
I have sold lots and lots of both of those firearms. I have had dozens of people come back to say how great there 10/22's are and how much they love them, I have also had even more people come back with there 597 in order to send them back for warranty work.
I love my SR-22 never ever had a problem. And it shoots great. I use an old 9" steel chop saw blade with my vortex sparc at 200 yards its awesome.

mardig88 Wholesale Sports has the base blued and synthetic clad Rugers on for $230 and that's where I bought mine for a few weeks ago. I'm not such a huge fan of wood, and since I'm going to put the Maurauder kit on it anyway the synthetic stock isn't such an issue for me.

Here's a thought for you before you drink the kool-aid: How many 10/22s do you see going up for sale in the EE? How many 597s? Almost a dozen by the day go up, and I wonder why...

If you are going to get a gun that you want to last, grab one that you don't see popping up for sale every 30 seconds - there's likely a reason.

I had hoped to find a second-hand Marlin 60 to save a few bucks, but I couldn't one anywhere. No one wants to part with them, and now that I own a new one I know why.

Choices

One of the biggest problems with the Remington 597, the plastic magazines, has been recognized by Remington, and metal magazines are now the current production. Remington will replace the plastic ones.

However, the most common problem is the guide rods. When people take them out so they can clean the rifle, they TIGHTEN THE LOCKING SCREWS TOO MUCH.

Yes, I know that the Remington Manual says to tighten them to 10 inch-pounds. However, most people do not have the correct torque wrench, and they tighten the screws to much. This puts pressure on the guide rods, and can bend them slightly, causing them to rub on the bolt, which causes ejection problems. If you tighten them finger tight, then back off a 1/4 turn, then they will work amazingly well. ( Finger tight in this case is using the small end of the provided hex wrench as the lever part, and one finger to turn it to tighten up the screw.)

Also, it seems best to free float the barrel. A piece of sandpaper wrapped around a socket ( 5/8, 11/16, small spark plug, ) that is the correct size will do that.

For under $50, a Volquartsen hammer is available, and should cut the trigger pull weight in about half. LIGHT lubrication on the guide rods, no heavy grease or heavy oil, and it will work nicely.

The 597 seems to be very accurate and shoots the bulk ammo well. 36 grain Federal HP in mine shoots like target ammo.

Just some observations on the 597 so far.

This is very true. In fact, the marlin is the top selling 22 ever. It has outsold the ruger by a factor of 3. You hear more about the ruger because of it's cult following due to it's customizability but the fact is that the marlin is more popular and people seem to want to hang onto them.

never shot a 597, but have owned 3 different 10/22, i have had some minor problems with the 10/22s, some extraction, some feeding, crappy mags were the cause of the feeding problems, a little shaping of the extractor fixed the extraction problems, I vote 10/22 for aftermarket support...

I agree that the 30 rounders remington offer are sh*t. I only load to 25. The feed lips often need re-enforcing.

the best 10 round mags are the ones with a ten with a circle around them (should be towards the bottom of the metal)

if you get a 597, get a heavy barrel! I have myself a 597 yellowjacket. its great, the barrel doesn't heat up as much and keeps its POI pretty darn good in gopher territory.

My 10/22 has been very reliable, with very few jams, all of which can be attributed to a couple of the aftermarket magazines I've bought for it. Just make sure to buy the Butler Creek "steel lips" mags, not the plastic "hot lips" mags, and you should be all right.
