I'm new to the rifle market and I'm looking at the Ruger 10/22. There is so many choices, I don't know where to look.

I'm looking for a model on which I could easily install a scope and would be mainly used for target shooting (No small game).

Should I just go with the basic carbine model or aim for a target or tactical model with bipod? Some have some kind of ring in front and some not, is that of any importance? I do know it's a highly modifiable platform; while I usually keep my pistols stock I wouldn't want to close any doors if I ever want to mod it.

Thanks for the inputs!

You can get the basic model for about $240... The metal arround the bbl is a bbl band. The target models do not have this. The few things you can change that i would recommend, is an extended mag release, just to make it more comfortable. Then you can get into volquartsen parts and finally, target babbles and about 10 different stocks.

Also there are kit stocks like the archangel

and many many more... you can start with the basic model, in my opinion that is the best way. in the end the only thing out of that rifle that will remain stock is the receiver, lol

I went with the Target "Tactical" as my first and am very happy with it. It is double the $ though, but it is very accurate and I have a great rifle without the need to do upgrades, but still the option.

I found the Target barrel to be very accurate. I can't say it's more accurate than the regular barrel but I have heard that upgrading from the stock sporter barrel is essential.

The 10-22's come with a factory scope mount. Just screw it on and you are set. Best bet get a plain jane and modify to your hearts content when or if you think you need to. I believe all the new 10-22's come with an extended mag release installed. Makes the mag changes so much easier. That is the only mod I have done on mine and I have been shooting it a lot since 1974

I have 10-22 and all are very reliable but for great accuracy without mod, i definetly recomend the SR-22, incredebile accuracy stock... JP.

If you like wood, I'd go with the DSP model (Deluxe Sporter) - Comes in a nice checkered walnut stock without the goofy barrel band at the front, as well as sling swivels and nice rubber butt pad. About $300
You can still swap it into some kind of tact. stock what have you, but always go back to nice wood when the situation calls for it.
I've also got an SR-22 - Caramel is correct - great accuracy out of the box and you'll like the feel of the heavier barrel when you pull the trigger, but if you're not sold on tacticool, than maybe not the best choice.

+1 for the sr-22. I just bought one and I love it! My cousin bought the ruger 10/22 carbine and he plans on putting a marauder stock on it (also a very nice choice). My only complaint of the carbine stock is the stock iron sights are solid black and caused a bit of eye strain for me (especially when shooting at a dark bullseye lol).

If you aren't sure you want to spend more than a few hundred then go with any stock 10/22 (they all have the same barrel and trigger) and try it out. If u decide u wanna spend more then upgrade to a marauder stock ;). Or if u want a kickass gun straight outta box and arent concerned too much with cost, the sr-22 would be my top pick!
