Ruger 10/22 with AR Stock kit OR M&P 15-22 (or other AR looking .22)

Hi,

I am a fairly new shooter and started with a Savage Mark II F. While the dream is to eventually build an AR of my own, I was looking at something more practical in the meantime.

I've narrowed it down to either picking up a 10/22 and putting it in an Archangel, ATI, or other suck stock OR buying a M&P 15-22 or another AR inspired .22 (i.e. Marlin 715T). Haven't been able to decided so far. I'm not a big fan of the Ruger banana mag, but it's not really a make or break.

Any advice, tips, or prior experience would be helpful. Most just plinking and target shooting for now. And yes I would much rather just start the AR build, but I don't have a great workspace for the project, and the restricted status rules attached are definitely a bummer.

If restricted is serious detriment for your purposes you won't want an M&P 15-22, though it's a fantastic little rifle. The Mossberg 715T is absolute garbage. A 10/22 is a great rifle in its own right and, with the right furniture, can definitely pull a lookalike off. The only thing you're really missing with the 10/22 is the control and operation similarity with an AR.

Honestly though, if I were in your shoes I'd just spend that money directly on an inexpensive AR and get to know the platform. When the time comes to do your dream build you'll have a MUCH better idea of what you like and don't like and it will likely save you a LOT of trial and error money. A brand new Norinco or something used off the EE would run about the same price as a 10/22 plus a decent furniture kit anyway.
 
Hey there I am in a similar situation. I believe the M&P 15-22 is restricted. I would go with a 10/22 although it is now limited to 10 rounds, there are so many options you can do with it. The mossberg 715t is kind of plasticy and cheap when I saw it I was not that impressed. I have an archangel stock and i really liked it but I ended up getting the Nordic AR22 kit. it's a lot nicer and can take regular AR furniture. The archangel is nice but still just didn't feel high quality enough for me. Take a look at the Ruger SR-22 rifle also, it is a more expensive option though. Best to decide if you rather put that extra money into your AR or spend more on the .22

Thanks for the advice. Sounds like it would be best to go for the AR. Which I'm not so broken up about. It just sucks that it can only go to the range.

Now a follow up question. Would you recommend buying and getting used to a AR first before trying to build one? It seems like the logical thing to do.

I'd just get something basic and start playing with swapping out parts as the mood strikes. Gradually you'll wind up with two, that's how they multiply ;)
 
pick up a Ruger SR22 for training.
you can still get them on the cheap if you look around.
its non restricted and a really solid build of a gun!

than pick up a cheap AR - Dominion or Norc and the likes.
start playing with that.
once your comfy with the platform and ripping them apart you can buy or build your own mid range one.

logical procession.
