I have always wanted one of these, and their reputation precedes them for accuracy and reliability let alone the endless mods you can do. The aftermarket for these rivals the 5.0 Mustang. I would like an accurate, reliable rimfire, I intend to get my son and wife into shooting, and the thought of cheap ammo/accurate rifle is right up my alley. Question: are the target models different only by the heavier barrell and different stock? I was just wondering what avenue to go if to just by a standard and upgrade it, or is the target worth it, and does it have a better triggergroup than the standard models? Basically I am just looking for some insight in which direction to go. Appreciate the input, thanks.

i have a 10/22 carbine. i love it the way it is but i am doing some upgrades to it. they are pretty great right out of the box. the target model i have heard has had a few problems and is to expensive for what it comes with. if i were you just go with a stock one.

Quality aftermarket barrels are getting harder and harder to come by in Canada. Some day we might have to revise our thinking regards the Target model 10-22 - simply for the donor barrel to be worked over by a smith.

If you're looking for a really accurate 10-22, then you might be better off watching the EE closely and buying someone else's "ultimate". Factory Ruger 10-22's aren't anymore accurate than any other semi auto 22. They can be upgraded to be superb shooters, but obtaining the parts in Canada to do that can be a real challenge.

The bull barreled version (10/22T) has a different barrel and stock as you mentioned, as well as slightly different trigger (slightly better pull weight).

I would just get the sporter style version - at around $240 or so and customize it. You will learn a lot from that - and end up with an accurate gun. If you take a look at the 10/22 sicky at the top of the page there is a lot of valuable information.

I like my 10/22RR just the way it is. It has no barrel band, has a longer 20" barrel, and fiber optic sights. It's fairly accurate the way if comes from the factory.

How's this. 50 round grouping at 50 meters with a standard run of the mill 10/22 carbine with no mods( bought it at Pro Hardware 19 years ago. )
. Fired about 1 shot/sec through 5x10 round mags. I think it's plenty accurate. This could be better. When taking it down for cleaning the stock screw was loose!. Will post again when I go out again.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will be getting a standard model, a local dealer has some in stock. I see most guys go with the blued models, anyone modify a SS one? I'll check the sticky's for some links etc... I am really excited. I likely will pick one up Saturday. Anyone stock big mags in Canada? If I add a bull barrell, will I need to switch the stock first? I would appreciate any links or info you guys could provide me with, this will be my first rifle project. If I keep it all stock for the time being, would it be better to go with the synthetic stock? My little boy is excited too, he will learn to shoot with this one:)

That target looks like a mess to me.
If my gun shot like that I would buy something else. My 10g patterns like that.

Really? If you were shooting 50 meters offhand with open sights, you could do 5 mag changes and end up with a significantly smaller grouping from a factory 10-22 using run-of-the-mill ammo? I didn't see the author mentioning shooting from a bench rest, using a scope, or shooting match grade ammo so I have to say his grouping looks pretty good to me.

Based on what I'm seeing and reading I don't think you can make inferences period. I would no more think off-hand than I would kneeling, prone, or from a bench. too little info to go on.

I love my 10/22 RR - esp. the little bit of extra barrel. Nice meshing of wood & metal, flawless function with the factory mag, and fun with the higher-cap mags, too. :)

Rapid-fire at 50 m with a standard 10/22? With a losse barrel? That's not bad grouping at all...I recall running through AR-7's at around that ROF (mag changes considered) - the groups were a little messier, to say the least...;)

At least I'm willing to give him benefit of the doubt. ;)

Either buy a completed MOD 10/22 in the EE or buy a stock one and modify it yourself. I bought a stock one from a member on the board and then got a folding stock, Green Mountain fluted SS bull barrel, VQ extractor, VQ bolt release, Hammer and sear kit, extended mag release ... now to paint up Tiny Tina and post pics soon ... she's awesome ... and fun to change up!
