Ruger 1911 Front sight failed!

Just curious if anyone has encounter the same problem as me, I was out at the range and after firing a few rounds, lining up for the next shot, I realized the front sight is gone. Upon inspection, it has snapped off with just the base remaining.

And if you had this problem. What was the solution? Any help from Ruger warranty?

WTF....I have the same one, they come with factory Novak sights which are pretty good quality

Are you sure you didnt drop the firearm or bump it on something? cause this seems unheard of just from firing ?

I've blown the paint off a front sight after 2000 plus rounds on an MP40 but never seen anything like this

Thanks for the info, I had absolute no idea, and hope the OP gets it fixed for free, what actually causes this?

Combination of recoil, slide getting hot, low quality of materials used to produce the front sight?
 
I had mine break back in May. I called up snapshot and sent them just the slide, it took about 1.5 weeks door to door to get it fixed under warranty.
 
i wouldn't worry too much about it.
ive got 2 SR1911's, one normal and one commander length, both are from the first year of production and my front sights have held up just fine.
its also a very well known issue and Ruger has been replacing all broke ones that i have heard of so far.

for a time i was exclusively shooting my SR1911's every time i went to the range just to see if i could have them break off, the whole i would rather have it happen when i want it too not when its inconvenient, but alas mine are still on.

Just curious. I was thinking of replacing mine with a Fiber Optic and it's the only upgrade I felt this fine pistol needed anyways.

In total, how many rounds did you shoot, since pistol was new, before the front sight failed?

I'll just order in a Fiber Optic Front sight just in case mine fails.

Not at all uncommon, unfortunately - first read about it, after lol getting my own SR1911 a couple years back. But I've been lucky I guess and mines still on there, and it's been shot a fair bit.
 
Yep. Had one and it dis the exact same thing after a couple of boxes of ammo. I sended it to Snapshot and they replaced it no qustion asked. It was like 3-4 years ago, so i don’t know what their turnaround time is like now. At the time it took like 2-3 weeks IIRC.
 
Very common problem indeed. As mentioned Locations Snapshot has a very good turnaround on these. Maybe look at the Ruger Novak Fiber Optic front sight for the SR1911 while the slide is going in. I think it was about $70 or so and they will install it. Ruger wont ship them to Canada, but Locations has (had) them..#12976) Best thing I did for the SR1911. Just be sure to ask for the replacement original to be sent as well(spare). If I recall the whole issue came to light as a result of their choice to use MIM parts at the time.

im in the same boat.
i replaced the front site on my SAM Thunderbolt with FO and i LOVEEEEEE it.
ive been waiting for my SR1911's to fail so i can replace them with FO as well.

still waiting....
 
My gun was never dropped or bumped into anything, arrive to/from range in a foam padded case, shoot and go home each time. There are many of owner with similar result, you can find many YouTube video of same thing. Some people even had repair done and that broke too!

I have contact Ruger repair Centre in QC, they offered if I send them the slide, they'll install a new sight free of charge.

This is a know problem at least with the earlier models. Based on what I read a couple of years ago Ruger will replace the site under warranty. I have had mine for about three years and put thousand of rounds through her without issue. I believe they fixed the problem at least three years ago but you may have got old stock. Love that 1911. Been a great firearm.
