I have a stainless mkII variant 22/45 and had an identical blued version. Both 5.5" bull barrels. The rifling in the blued goes to the crown whereas the stainless barrel appears sleeved or counterbored around 3/8" in. Anybody know if this is a factory thing for the stainless barrel or perhaps a past repair to the crown. If it is a repair, whoever did it did an excellent job. Thanks

Crown measures 0.250" and smooth 0.810" in then ridge/ring and rifling begins.

Mmmm not sure if I'm thinking the same as you but I had a Blued mk III and a stainless mk III. The blued had a recessed target crown whereas the stainless crown is not recessed as in the rifling goes right up flush with the end of the barrel

For mine, the exterior appearance both look identical. No indent for a recessed target crown. When I look down the barrel it looks like a reburb Mosin nagant barrel that was counterbored. Near perfect smooth bore about 3/8" in, with a very defined ring then rifling is visible.

when looking at the Ruger web page i found this
looks like the Hunter has the recessed cut barrel but the normal mkIII does not.

Thanks for the responses so far. I have since posted on rim fire central and ruger forum net. Also emailed ruger. I can take a picture as requested but there will be nothing to see as tip of barrel is smooth like a regular bull barrel, I won't be able to get a pic of the inside of the bore, too small for my camera to focus.
