Hi, I want to buy my first pistol and I'm currently looking at both of these pistol.

I can get the Ruger for 279.99$ in store around here and the GSG for around 399$.

The only reason I'm looking at the GSG is the look, I love the 1911 and I'm going to buy a SR1911 as soon as I find one which is hard to do.

Which one would you buy between the 2 ?

The only problem is the value, I think the Ruger is a much better value for the price than the GSG.

S&W MP 22 kicks the S#*T outta both of them!

The GSG is far more picky about ammo and cleaning, and the finish wears very easily.

The 22/45 grip is too thin, unless your getting the more expensive one with real 1911 grips, and takedown is not fun. Also slamming the upper on and off that plastic lower doesn't boast confidence. It also looks like a spacegun and seems more suited to a Star Wars movie than a range trip.

I have owned the 22/45, and a good friend owns the GSG. I since sold the Ruger, and bought the SW MP 22, and now my buddy wants to do the same.

I have owned a lot of 22 pistols and the only one that has kept me interested is that SW MP 22.

My 0.02 cents; give it some serious thought.

Agree with the ill fitting Ruger grip, probably the worst grip of any pistol I've shot. I'm sure those who love it will disagree. MP22 gets lots of love on the forum now, have never seen or touched one so I can't say. Had a GSG 1911 and it was decent, the finish and the finnicky nature when dirty has been noted before and is true. However it has a tried and true 1911 platform going for it, with proven ergonomics.

Never buy a gun...especially a .22LR one for looks alone. Sure it looks like a 1911 but it sure as hell isn't shooting .45s!!! Just a personal thing, I am not a fan of AR-15s in .22LR either.

The Ruger pistols...Mk. II, Mk. III and the 22/45 have been around forever. Very tough pistols, very easy to upgrade and find parts for. Take down sucks yes...but if you follow the instructions in the manual completely then there is no reason to fret and besides their is no reason it needs to be done all the time either. Took me 3 times to take it apart reading the manual and now I can do it by memory.

Get a model with adjustable sights...REQUIRED in my option as many different brands and weights of .22LRs shoot vastly different...I disliked holding my buddy's GSG 3inches left and 2 inches down to hit eggs at 5 yards. Spending the extra $30ish on the 22/45 model with removable grips is well worth it and lastly the Ruger will hold its value much better then a GSG will...just look through the EE if you want proof.

I have a mkii 22/45 target and I will never part with it. Retarded accurate, completely reliable, way overbuilt for a lifetime of blasting. Only thing I have worn out are recoil springs which are cheap and easy to find. I find when you start feeling powder burns on your hands its time to change the spring. Take down is not hard and no tools are required to do so.
I have a GSG as well, it is 1911ish ergonomically, but tools required for disassembly and there are some small fragile pieces in the build that look iffy for long term durability. So far its been great though, accurate and reliable. I just don't see it outlasting the Ruger...

Ruger Hands down.

I would stay away from all these new pot metal .22 handguns.

I owned a GSG 1911-22 and also had a Standard MKII and Target MKIII, take down is a pain when new as they(MKIII) are very tight, but once its been striped a few times its a breeze(60-90 seconds to strip and reassemble).

The GSG and all the other pot metal(cast zinc etc) are not going to last anywhere near as long as the Ruger, but if you are not going to shoot it much then it will probably be fine.

I just picked up a Ruger Mk3 Hunter, go for a regular Ruger Mk1, 2, or 3 and you can't go wrong. Beautiful fit and finish, accurate and reliable. I like the new location of the magazine release on the Mk3's but the magazine disconnect and loaded chamber indicator aren't really necessary additions. The Mk 1's and 2's don't have these but the magazine release is on the heel of the grip. CRAFM has a Mk2 Target for $225 on their website.

OP, make sure you hold both and decide. Also, there are other 22 pistols that may be better than the 2 you have listed. The ergonomics of the Ruger were horrible for me. The 1911 fit me better. Bought the GSG for $379, shot 1000rds and sold it on the EE for $350. So much for no resale value.

You didn't have the GSG very long...finish will wear on them pretty fast provided you own and shoot it for a few months.

Ruger Mk. I, II and IIIs have the same grip angle/style the closely copy that of a Luger...not a very common pistol people are comfortable with in 2012 and the 22/45 ones have the same grip action and controls layout as a 1911 obviously.

First of all thank you for all the information, i'm really not set to only these choice two choice. The m&p 22 seem to be an excellent gun and very tempting. I don't think i will be able to hold the pistol in my hand before purchasing, the problem is that most gun store around here do not carry pistol and when they do, the choice is really slim. The look of the ruger 22/45 or mark 2-3 is really a turn off for me but the reputation is so good that i might endnup with it.

The browning mark 22 seem to be good to and the look is not that bad. I don't need my pistol to look like a 1911 or anything like that, i just don't like the look of the 22/45-mark.

But then again i don't want to sacrifice accuracy. If only there was a pistol that had everything in .22 : precision, reliability, look, ease of maintenance.

There's also another factor to consider: will you always shoot with open sights or do you want the option of mounting a red dot?

Many of the Rugers and Brownings come with either a detachable or integral Weaver-type rail for mounting a sight. GSGs and most similar pistols (i.e. anything with a moving slide) do not.

GSG will be more fun, and you don't need to be a gunsmith to disassemble it.:)

How is it more "fun"? Inaccurate fixed sights, tools required for take down and cheaply made with pot metal all spells something out for me and it for sure is not fun...

"Buy and try", is all I can say. Sights are adjustable for elevation and it's accurate enough.
Allan key for a take down, isn't a major concern for me. Not like it has to be cleaned ever 50 rds.
And it's a heck of alot easier than a Ruger!
Well enough made to last me my lifetime, even though it may be made outta pots and pans.
And if you are not into 1911's, you wouldn't understand the fun of a GSG anyways.:)
