Recently purchased this Ruger 223. Stainless, lightweight & all weather. I plan to hunt caribou & seals.

I sited it in but haven't shot anything with it yet. I did loan it to a friend as we had thousands of caribou walk past town last week & he said he was approx 100 yards & one shot. I plan to hunt caribou this fall & seals.

Sweat, I've been hoping to find that extact rife for a while now. I love the stainless canoe paddle Rugers, they tend to be very nice hunting rifles with good accuracy.

Hey Otokiak,
I assume these are push feed rifles in .223?? I can't imagine a full length extractor for such a small cartridge. I have that exact rifle in .338 winmag and love it.

Something to consider, there is a collectors market for those boat paddle Rugers.

You could maybe sell that one , buy another newer one and have some cash in your pocket.

But if it were me, I'd keep it and shoot it.

Thanks for the comments. I hope it serves me well. I had one long ago & sold it & kicked myself ever since. They are ideal for my environment as they're all weather & lightweight. I'd love to find one in .243.

That's quite a departure from PGW beast, but I can see where a .50 would be a bit much for boos. Seal hunting! I thought you didn't like sea ice, or is this for shooting from a boat? That would be a challenge.

They are CRF, I used to have a standard M77 in .223
I've never been a fan of the all-weather, but I know lots of people who love them. My friend has one in 7mm magnum.
Isn't .223 a bit light for Caribou? I don't know, but they seem kind of big and tough for a .223?

I could punch a tuktu in the head and kick it and it would die. They are not tough nor big nor impenetrable. Hahaha. 223 is just fine for tuktu and seals. I'd love a 243 as I had one before and it really was an all around rifle here.

I literally walked up to one about 9 years ago. (to within 5 feet) and could have literally stabbed it or hit it with a baseball bat. It showed NO FEAR. I just walked about 100 yards and turned back and shot it...................just cause my scope was dialed in at 100 :)
I bet a .22 mag would be plenty. They are sure not hard to drop.

. . .

Barren grounds caribou are quite a bit smaller than the woodland caribou you might be familiar with, but even woodland caribou give up the ghost easily. Across the arctic, .22 centerfires have been popular for caribou and seals for generations.

Thanks for the seal hunting pictures... they look like larger groundhogs to me! LOL....

Here's a groundhog from my local safaris here in South Central Ontario....

Cheers for the jokes!
