Ruger #3 or #1 Smokeless Muzzle Loader

I don't see why not. It's a little unusual but should work. You would have to get really soft .458" bullets to push into the rifling, but you could cast those easily enough.

You're re-inventing the wheel backwards.....at a cost far higher and a danger far closer than necessary when there are inexpensive guns on the market made for these purposes. The ruger #1 is an expensive rifle to be playing around with..an NEF handi rifle would be a less expensive alt. if you must.

Re: Projectiles
I was thinking of using 45 carlibre muzzleloading sabots, which I believe use a smaller diameter pistol bullet inside the plastic sabot as the projectile, which would be loaded from the front. Of course, a cheaper solution would be to pruchase a cheaper gun, but I have the Ruger #1 Tropical and thought it might work. Upon relfection, I have an adapter that allows the shooting of 45 ACP in the 458. The adapter looks like a modified 458 case, except it is made of steel. Perhaps I already have the modification, I have comtemplated. Any thoughts? Thanks again.

Muzzle loading sabots are .450" are they not? Your bore is going to be .458".
Sounds like you already have your adaptor. Won't your charge fall out when you try to insert the .45 ACP. case?
