I was bush stalking this morning in mountainous dry country , i took advantage of yesterdays rains and slipped up into a private hut for the night, i stopped an stalked up into a gulley an glassed several fallow deer come along the ridge late in the afternoon, but no Sambar.
im on a mission to find a sambar hind to mount up, this area holds little population compared to the rest of the surrounding areas, with farmland bordering the 'range', they get picked off on the farms pretty quick an seldom grow too old (stags) but over time the hinds have built up in a few areas but move so much as the country is dry an steep..
anyway last trip a few days ago i noted a dead Wallaby near the hut in the bush about 100m away, i thought it odd the young fellas would of shot a Wallaby there, an noted it had been 'picked on by foxes'
this morning i headed up past that carcass and into the gulley heads on a steep sunny sided face, contouring along the top third looking below and hoping for above, after 2 hours or so i noted only few very spooky wallaby and no deer sign to even think about writing home about, pausing in a nice green clearing a flash of gold to my right drew my attention, initially thought a Fox (typically leave in this situation) but noted its size , Dog.
it had something in its mouth as it paused below me about 50 m, i instinctly wound the scope from 3 to 7 and get just enough clear view between some trees to squeeze the crisp trigger on the Number 1, the dog spun around and lay motionless.... you beautayyy.
$120 and another notch for the number 1, 303- 174gr woodleigh load.
wallabys foot it had in mouth
