Ruger 338 Lapua?

Can a ruger M77 magnum or a Ruger #1 be rebarreled in 338 Lapua?

Yes, the Rugers can be done. The Safari action will easily feed the Lapua from the mag. I think it holds 3rds. I have seen pics of pregnant floorplates so someone might make it a 4rds mag.

The Ruger #1 is a very simple rebarrel. Only problem is that if you want a very heavy contour, it may not fit given the forend spring mechanisms. Likely limited to the factory varmint contours. Trigger is never going to be BR light either.

I have built one .338 Lapua on a Number 1 and a couple of .338-378's. You can usually get the triggers down to 2 pounds with no problem...

Anything previously chambered in 416 Rigby or the 378 WBY case can be converted to 338 Lapua.

Sorry to hijack, but since we are on the subject.................I have read that the 700 Long Action is not really easy to build a .338 Lapua Mag on. Has anyone had experience with this one. I was planning to build one but might have to change actions.

Save your money and build an Ultra Mag... you won't have to butcher an action.

Remington built a couple of prototypes, but they had to use a SAKO style extractor to get it to work properly. Not the safest option for the 700 action. Guntech has posted some good pictures of the project. My understanding is that Remington is looking at beefing up their magnum action and upscaling it to more comfortably accommodate the larger mags like the .338 Lapua and still preserve their "3 Rings of Steel." I look forward to seeing their final product.

I agree with guntech, you will have less headaches and get similar velocities without any action mods. The other choice could be the 330 Dakota very similar velocities and it can be built on the standard 30-06 length action without alot of mods or in any RUM action, if you use the long actions it will leave more room in the mag for seating the bullets out, expect 2950 with a 250 gr bullet and a 27" barrel. Very accurate caliber.

338 RUM will give you identical performance to the Lapua. The improved 340 Wby will come close (a wildcat on this board run hot is getting the same performance).
