Hello Guys,

As you can guess, I’m a 9mm guy. However, I’m looking forward to purchase a Ruger 345 (picture below). Any advice on this ? Is this a good pistol or a piece of junk ? Are people going to laugh at me because I own a Ruger semi-auto, not as popular as Beretta, Sig and Glock ? Is it durable? What do you think

Thanks !

From reading the posts regarding it at rugerforums.com, it seems solid. I will likely be keeping it on my list of guns to buy. I have never had any issues with any of their guns, they are not the prettiest around, but to me reliablilty is much more important than looks.

Check for yourself here at Ruger Forums

I have shot Rugers before, and they are built solid. But the fits and finishes are not quite what I would look for in a pistol. Depending what this person is selling it for, it might be a good deal and a worth while buy. But I would spend a little more to get something along the lines of a Sig, Glock, Baby Eagle or a Beretta.

By the way, you say you are a 9mm guy? As in you are looking for a 9mm caliber handgun? The Ruger 345 is 45acp only. As far as I've heard of, there isn't an upcoming 9mm version as of yet.

Ruger is actually very popular, perhaps not in Canada per se. In the US, Rugers are popular choices for self-defence, home defence pistols. While the other brands you mention obviously have their merits, Rugers are cheaper, are reliable and basically due to the price factor, one wouldn't care about it as much to junk it around. I don't think their are many people here who would be willing to leave their Sigs laying around collecting dust, corroding and etc...

Pistols are always personal choices. Fit and personal use matter more than anything in this category of pistol. The 345 is compact, slim(well single stack) and 45acp. Some of the other choices mentioned are obviously good, though more expensive...

No one will laugh you because of own a Ruger semi. Ruger is okay but not great. I think you should try one before you buy. Many people from the Ruger forum like them.

You'll want to try it on for size before you buy one. See if it fits your hand. The trick will be finding one to try on.
"...restricted or prohib..." Restricted. The .45 comes in 4.5"(114.30mm) and 4.25"(107.95). Not much longer than 105mm, but longer. Mind you, a 4.25" .45 will be loud and have lots of muzzle blast.

I've owned one for about a year now with probobly about 4000 or more rounds thru it and so far so good. Its a very simple double action gun. There's nothing particularly outstanding about it but it is very durable and it shoots great. Much slimmer than the old P series and the trigger reset is faster so your follow up shots are quick. This gun has a new "cam block guide rod assembly" which reduces felt recoil and adds strenght to the gun. It works well. As far as toughness goes, Ruger warranties thier P series for a lifetime of +P ammo. Its quite accurate for a cheap gun as well [ with its favorite ammo] I shot one 2" group @ 25 yrds and average around 3.5" . There are better guns out there but not for the money that these go for. Good luck.

Finish is nice, but the really important thing about a handgun is that it goes BANG every time you squeeze the trigger no matter what you feed it. Anything else is simply cosmetic.;)

A Ruger will do just that at a reasonable price.

Thinking of getting one too

I was going to post the same thread asking for opinions but I've obviously found this one!

love9mm - From articles I've read on the net about this Ruger they agrees with everything that has mentioned here so far. I think what it comes down to is what are you really going to use it for?

It's obviously a good gun, and at the end of the day like how the other guy mentioned it goes "bang" no problem. I'm not planning to compete with it something like that, but just to have a .45 around and cut paper targets on the weekend seems very economic on the pocket book (just for the gun, not the ammo! )

I'm out of the country right now, but one of the first thinks I would like to do before buying one is actually pick one up and see how it feels, and if I'm lucky enough find a local range that has one, or someone who does and lets me shoot a few rounds though it. But really, I can't say I've fired a gun I couldn't shoot :D

Who cares if anyone thinks less of someone who shoots a Ruger. If that's the case they don't have a healthy respect for all firearms!
