I've got a new to me Ruger carbine and just wondering what all you guys are using in yours ?.I tried the Hornady leverlution in my 30-30 and it didn't work and don't want to spend the money on hornady 44 ammo and find the same thing happen.I know theres lots of ammo choices out there and just want to make the right choice without wasteing money.A guy in my deer camp has the ruger 96 and tried the wolf ammo and it was crap in his rifle so thinking it's more for handguns ?.
Thanks !

It was designed around a 240 grain slug and at the time Remington was the standard.

I knew it was a big chunk of lead but some ammo works best in certain rifles and remington has made this for a long time and just don't want to experament with dif ammo too much and end up with stuff that just wont work properly

We shot the Hornadys in my buddys. No problems. He also had some .240 grainers and .210 cast. It cycled those no problem as well. There was a difference of about 6 or 8 " of drop at 50 yards. Fun A** gun to shoot!

My Ruger semi is one of the older ones. I do not hand load for it. I have been using 240 grs. in Winchester, Federal, and American Eagle brands. The brands print a little different on target but they all function well in the rifle. Topped the little gun off with a holo sight (Echo Tec type) works just great and very happy with the whole set up. Great little bush guns for dogging etc. as you will soon discover. Once you get used to this gun you will never part with it unlike your W-100 carbine.

I second the 240 gr XTPs. Great round. I also use the 300gr version if I am hunting moose.

I love mine now that I have replaced the cracked stock and broken retaining bracket that the last owner didn't tell me about.

It is light, fast to the shoulder, and recoil isn't much.

I have an older finger groove stocked 44 Carbine and it also shoots best with any 240 grain offerings, jacketed of course. Lately I have been using PMC as I had a decent stock of them. Winchester seems to work well also. I had feeding issues years ago with some of the other lighter ammo, but a short trip to visit Ralf Martini fixed that and it now cycles anything without fail.

I love this little carbine in the thick stuff, it is very accurate and has little to no recoil! I think you will enjoy this little gem that Ruger should have never stopped producing.

I also use the Winchester 240 gr JSPs in mine, same groupings. Functions great and slick. The Remington 240 are just as good, but I like the Winchester better.

240 grain soft point jacketed bullets work best in mine for deer I found the XTPs over expanded at close range.
Avoid cast bullets, they shoot ok but will gum up the gas system and is a pain to clean out.

240 grain in Winchester or Remington work well in mine. I tried 180 grain (pistol rounds I guess) to provide lighter recoil for my wife and they didn't cycle very well.

Both the Rossi I had and the Ruger I have liked the Hornady XTP 240 could not get good groups with the Leverevolution, also shot American Eagle SPECIAL.
