I bought a 1974 Ruger 44 Semi-Automatic 44 Magnum Carbine (Model 44) [not a Deerfield 99/44] , serial in the "102-###x"

I would appreciate if someone could help me find a rail that will mount on top.. there are 2 front hole which i can't use and 2 screw holes in the back of the receiver (on top off course) so i guess the rail would have to be pretty short.. not sure how will i mount a 1-4 scope on that little gem

other than the scope and mount situation.. it shoot very well and will become my new bush gun starting this year.

Any help or input are welcome

thank you for your time

There is a two piece Weaver set. One base on the barrel, the other on the receiver. Works fine on mine. Also a pair of Leupold bases.
Don't know about a one piece rail.

This is the usual bases...

I am not at home right now but I am very curious about "how .. and does it hold well on the barrel" ? dont tell me I missed noticing a set of screw on the barrel to mount a front rail (or the front part of a 1 piece pica rail)

Thank you very much captonion!

i'll try to decide which is the best and get used to the idea of loosing the iron sight (which i kind-of like.. Keep it simple style)

I think the gun is begging for a rear peep and front Fire Sight blade... would give you the visibility you need in dark timber, where you will probably be using it... unless your eyesight is failing as badly as mine has over the past couple years... I have noticed that I have purchased a number of 2-7 scopes with German #4 reticles and illuminated center dots to replace iron sights on a number of rifles...

You could buy a set of tip-off mounts so you can still use open sites when you want them.I bought a set and like them. They aren't made anymore but still able to find them on fleebay, etc.

so far the vision is still good.. but who knows when mine gonna drop..

funny thing before posting here.. i read somewhere else a recommendation about a VX-R 2x7 33mm which is pretty much what you are recommending too..

i need to rethink about all options

I have had one of these little Rugers for many years, they are a great gun in the bush. I went the expense of a Bushnell Halo sight, (they are sold under a different name now which doesn't correctly come to mind at present "Echo" something I think). I have been very satisfied with this sighting system. Apparently the US military uses these halo graphic sights or a version of them.
Works fine in sun light all the way to taking out racoons and coyotes around the chicken coup at night. I found that the pistol grip was to thick for my gloved hand and the stock in general was a bit clunky. I thinned out and formed a pistol grip with cap area and generally thinned and refined the whole stock taking all the sharp square edges off it. This did not affect its structural integrity as the material removal is modest in reality. I would post some pictures but all the kids are packed away for my impending move.
