so I have a ruger 44 mag carbine. it is tubular mag. I manually close the action put 4 rounds in the tube fine then when I pull the bolt back to load it stay in the open position it seem like the round isn't releasing the bolt. if I manually push the bolt release it closes and I can shoot the round then when the bolt goes back it does not pick up the next round. I've taken it apart cleaned it I don't see any broken parts. any help would be appreciated

had a similar issue, was directed to a 'ruger 'gunsmith in New Hampshire (rody's gun shop).
he told me they like to run dry , oil quickly collects gunk & slows them down.
suggested breaking it down & apply a GOOD hosing with break cleaner letting it run out.
no oil in the mag tube, just lightly lube the bolt rails.
i was skeptical but he was right.
haven't had an issue since.

If gas ports are clean ,it's not much keeping it from cycling, likely gummed up effecting the action timing.clean and dry clean and dry .use gun slick to lube instead of oils.

Are you using 240 gr ammo? I found that mine wouldn't cycle properly with 185 gr stuff. Keep lead bullets away, they will plug the gas port. Take a close look at the "plug" that is actuated by the gas, it has to move freely in that housing.

I'll take it apart and clean with break clean. the thi g I find strange is it doesn't pick up a round when I fill the mag and pull the bolt back to load a round in the chamber it holds the bolt open every semi rifle I have when you pull the bolt back it automatically feeds a round into the chamber this gun won't.

Is this the model that has a manual bolt release you have to press, right in front of the trigger guard?

yes it is. if I push it after I cycle the bolt it will release the bolt and for the round and eject it but will not chamber the next round. I have to push the manual release everytime thats why I think there's something wrong in the action and it's not having something pushed to detect there's around waiting

Ah, I think I understand - The bolt hold open is tripping every time you fire, before you get to an empty magazine?

I use 240 grain hp no lead ammo shouldn't be a an issue it wont load a round into the chamber even from the beginning. I should be able to put 4 rounds in the mag pull the bolt back and chamber a round. when I do this I have to push the bolt release so I'm sure there's something wrong with the mechanism that feeds it

Have you tried other ammo? Not every ammo works with every gun. I had a Marlin 1894c and it wouldnt chamber the 357 and 38spl I had on hand. Would jam in the loading phase.

the ruger manual states that you should load the 1st round into the chamber(with safety engaged), close the bolt & load remaining cartridges into the magazine.
the one i used to have had to be unloaded through the action opening(no cartridge release tab) but the bolt locked back on each cycling & had to press the bolt release each time.
i just rolled each round out separately without chambering it.
it would never cycle through by hand without holding that bolt release down.
