Hi everyone.
Anybody out there have or know anything about Ruger 6mm.
Got one coming and know nothing about them other then uncommon caliber.

For those who know anything about it any good hunting factory load suggestions?

Any info or experience you can input to thread would be appreciated.

I googled it not much out there on it.

Thanks!

Do you actually mean a 6mm Ruger? Or a Ruger rifle in 6mm Remington?
The 6mm Rem was once pretty popular. It is based on the 7mm Mauser case necked down to 6mm (or the .257 Roberts necked up) and is essentially equivalent to the .243 Winchester. It can be loaded a wee bit faster than the .243, but not a whole lot.
Most 100-grain factory ammo will do fine for deer. I'm sure you'll be able to find ammo in Regina.

You probably Googled "6mm Ruger", which I don't think exists. Google "6mm Remington" and you will have more info than you can shake a stick at.

The 6mm Remington is basically the 7x57 necked down to 6mm (probably by way of the 257 Roberts first, at least in North America. There was a 6x57 in Europe before the 6mm ever existed over here). It is a 6mm/.243 caliber, on a slightly larger case then the 243 Winchester. The longer neck is seen as a better choice by quite a few handloaders, and the larger case capacity will allow faster velocities then any given bullet weight compared to the 243 Win. Listed as the 6mm Remington in most handloading manuals, there is a lot of info available. - dan

Thanks guys found lots of info on the 6mm Remington which I believe is what I'm getting.
Never had much info on it my friend never knew what it was and the price is right....free.
That's what you get when you either have to transfer ownership to someone with a valid PAL or forfeit it to the crown. (Long story)

Looking forward to taking a look at it & reading up on it.
Thanks guys

Yes, I am one of those 6mm loyalists, lol.

I have an early "flat bolt" ruger in 6mm Remington.
Also have an early M700V HB Remington in this chambering.

Quite effective on deer sized game out past 300 meters.
Slow burning powders with a 90 - 105 grain bullet will get the job done.

If your rifle does not like the heavy bullets. [It should, the RUGER has a 1-10" twist]
Then you can go to the 80 TTSX or the 85 Nosler Partition.

I had a 6mm remington 7600 and loved it.It didnt shoot heavier bullets worth a crap (wrong twist for them) but 80 grain leads I could shoot dime sized groups all day.Unfortunatly I got rid of it and wish I never would of.I have a .243 and would trade in a minute for a 6mm,if I can ever find another one.I shot deer out to to 300 yds without a problem with it.For factory loads I always used Federal 80 gr soft points and they worked well, but with a 1-10" twist they should stabilize 100-105 gr bullets just fine.

I thought all the Rem 6mm's were 1-9 twist, and their predecessor, the 244 Rem (same case, different name and barrel twist) were all 1-12. This was because Rem envisioned the dual purpose rifle as primarily a varmint gun used occasionally for deer, and Win saw things the opposite way with their 243. After 243 sales turned out to be much more popular for the slightly heavier bulleted Win offering then the lighter Rem one, they re-engineered it as the 6mm. - dan

Dan has basically stated how the 6mm Remington evolved.
All Remington rifles marked 6mm Remington are rifled 1-9¼"
Rugers are 1-10"
Remingtons marked 244 Remington are 1-12"

Thanks Eagleeye I'll take a look at what model it is and the twist when i get it.

Want me to post pics when I get it?

I had a Ruger with a 1-10 twist and it would not sufficiently stabilize any bullet I tried that was over 85 grains. I have a 1-9 1/4 twist Remington now and it has no issues with any bullet I've loaded from 55 grain to 105 grain. Love this chambering!!!

What Ruger rifle is it? Yes, please do post pics asap. I like the 6mm Rem lots. I have one in a No.1V and another in a Rem 742. Of coarse the No.1 is the shooter!
