ruger 77/22 hornet

I purchased a used M77/22, first 2 shots:22hornet.jpg
Went online to : triggershims .com bought a few shims (.003" worked best for mine), I haven't shot it yet, but everyone says this will fix issue. Will update in next week when I get out to try it.
This was factory Hornady. The one on right actually split the case open. Please use caution, and eye protection of course!

**UPDATE**
After shim install, the groups may have tightened...but same results. Slight ring expansion at base, and one partial head separation as pictured above.
Guess it's time to send to a Smith... If I get my hands on some different factory loads, will try first.

If the OP comes to a solution, please recommend.

*2017-01-16 Hornady is replacing my ammo, see post #11.

tried a few reloads they seemed to hold together. The factory ammo was hornady. Ill shoot a few more and see what happens

I e-mailed Hornady the other day, the lot of 22 Hornet ammo (Item #8302) Batch #3152177 from my picture above seems to be defective, and they're replacing all of my ammunition from that lot at no charge. Hope this helps if your issue was not resolved.

This makes sense the hornet head spaces on the rim.

Cool little round. I have a 22 Hornet Savage Model 25 and it's quite accurate. I get longer case life with mild loads.

Interestingly, many years ago the industry maximum pressure for the 22 Hornet was reduced from 47,000 cup to 43,000 cup -

Something to keep in mind is that the hornets head space off the rim. A lot of hornet brass is very in consistent on on rim thickness. I didnget a bad batch of hornady brass though that all separated at about the same place. Try some different ammo,
If not, call ruger. You'll have to send it off to Quebec to get warranty work fin they want to fix it....

All .22 Hornet brass I have ever seen in 50 years is considerably under saami specifications , especially the diameter just ahead of the rim.

I would think you have a problem with very slight headspace and poor brass. More the brass than the rifle I would guess although it is common for Rugers to have a large diameter chamber.

My brother's had headspace issues - Ruger should of had a recall, very common problem apparently..... What a joke for the price of those guns.

Ruger would have been better served by using a Brewer type locknut barrel fastening system(As on their Ruger American)to allow for proper headspace adjustment. Careful chamber cutting is a must fer sure.

For a .22 Hornet, I would go CZ meself.

Ruger warranty centre is a breeze to deal with. Not being offered reimbursement for my shipping to thwm peeved me a little tho...
