For those of you that have and hunt with or know someone that uses the
77-44, I would like to know what you think of them as far as accuracy and feeding from the magazine.
I have read both negative and positive on the accuracy issue and not seen much about reliability on feeding.

dont know anyone that owns the 77/44, but i do know a couple people that own 99/44s & 96/44s as walkaround bush guns for deer and theyre really happy with them.

IMO consider the 99/44 and 96/44 - i think both the semi and lever would be better suited to the .44 mag than a bolt action.

I'm curious why the semi and lever would be a better choice for the 44 over the bolt action? I believe that they all use the same mag system so any feeding issue should be moot. In fact, if one wanted to handload the 44 mag and raise the pressure for higher performance, would the bolt action not be a stronger, and thus more suitable choice? I can't imagine the semi liking heavy cast bullet loads that much and think there would be much battering of the bolt with increased pressure handloads.

All this is purest theory as I own none of the above mentioned rifles.

I used to own one, I was very disappointed with the accuracy. Its a handy little gun to carry and I miss it for that reason. The factory mag spring failed the first week, had to buy a replacement. I suspect that it accuracy problems stem from the fact that its a rear lockup bolt, it you reload you might be able to find a decent load that will shoot.

both of the guys that own them praise how they are an amazingly handy little carbine - quick to shoulder, fast-handling, etc.
due to the design of these youre not going to get amazing groups out of the bolt-action anyway*, so why not go for the faster handling lever action or the semi? noone will argue that a levergun isnt faster than a bolt-action, as for the Deerfield - its based on a modified Mini-14 action: while Minis arent known to be the most accurate guns in the world either, nothing can be said about their absolute reliability, even when dirty.

from what ive just read about the accuracy of the 77/44, IMO if you want a handy bolt action carbine there are many better options than this. hell it doesnt even have to be a new factory rifle, there are tonnes of used bolt action carbines that would give you much better accuracy.

I've owned 3 or 4 of the semi auto carbines, they all shot much better then the bolt action 44. The reason I bought the Bolt 77/44 was to use heavy bullets as the barrel has a slightly faster twist, big mistake, I really should have kept the semi auto. Now if I could only find one of the newer 99/44 semi's I'd be really happy.

$550, faster, more accurate, more rugged/reliable and will kill anything in N America including zombies, yetis and rabid bears :)

rear lockup works perfectly fine for cartridges in the 40ksi and under class. The remington 788 used such a system and was known as an exceedingly accurate rifle. As was the Savage 340/stevens 325. And, of course, most lever guns use a rear-locking system as well (co-incidentally, most lever guns are at their best with 40KSI and under cartridges, too).

Huh? A levergun "isn't" faster than a bolt action??

for what it's worth, I REALLY want a 77/44. I had a 44 carbine and it's a fun little gun - accurate, too, with a few minor accuracy tweaks - but as a reloader I'm a little anal about recovering my brass and that's a royal PITA with a semi or lever

I had one and liked it--handled nicely and was accurate enough with jacketed bullets. Would not take my heavy cast revolver loads as they were too long for the mag so I sold it. If I ran across anotherone for a decent price I would pick it up.
