ruger 77/44

Hi guys im thinking about getting this rifle for whitetail and smaller game like beaver and coons. just woundering if this is a good quality gun. i head good and bad things about this gun so i was woundering.

I had one for a few years, but I just couldn't get it to shoot. I eventually traded it off, but it was a fun gun that I really enjoyed playing with. Part of the problem was that I probably expected too much of it...being a bolt action, it just seemed to me that it should shoot into 1MOA, and that just wasn't happening. The stock on the gun split behind the tang after only a couple hundred rounds, but Ruger replaced it without problems. Very cool little gun, nice big "bang", nice big bullet holes, lightweight and handy...I'll probably try another one someday.

Are you thinking about a used walnut-and-blue one, or the new SS model?

I got the SS version and it is a sub moa rifle with the proper reloads, at this day my most accurate 44 mag... Cheers. JP.

I have the new model with camo synthetic stock. I enjoy this little rifle. Short, easy to handle and fun to shot . No problem cycling rounds...

I have a stainless camo 77/44. I can shoot 2MOA with factory Remington but hates American Eagle ammo. Very compact and cool rifle.

If your going to WSS you had better call first and make sure they have some. I had one and the Mag broke the first trip to the range. It was a light fun gun to shoot, almost as accurate as an sks. I never found a factory round that it liked but maybe if you reload you will have better luck.

I had one Ruger 77/44 SSt. but it would not shoot the Barnes X bullets so I got rid of it.After 5 or 6 shots it looked like a smooth bore with all the copper in it.DAN>>>

I'd gamble and buy a 77 s/s canoe paddle in 44mag and reload for it, got a .22 & .22mag in the the same. Youngest son has a 77 s/s c/p in 260 & 270 and has put them both into beautiful Walnut stocks. I sure do adore the M77 action! Thank-you Bill Ruger & Co.

Well, good luck on going to WSS to look at one. I have phoned and there is no stock anywhere. The only way to get one is get an order started and they told me could be up to 6 mths.

I like mine. Very compact, powerful little rifle. I can get 2MOA with Hornady LeverEvolution and about the same with 270 grain Speer Deep Curl soft points over a max load of H110.

The only drawback was the very heavy factory trigger. I replaced the factory sear with a Volqaurtsen which left a much lighter trigger with just a hint of creep.
