I have a new, unfired Ruger 77 Hawkeye, blue matte, walnut stock in 35 Whelen. I believe mine is a very recent limited production in this chambering. The measured rate of twist (by me) is 1 in 12". All information I can find says it should be a 1 in 16" twist. Did Ruger decide to change to 1 in 12 for this last recent run and not publish data stating so??
If anybody has any info or a 77 in 35 Whelen with the 1 in 12 twist I'd appreciate hearing from you.
Cheers, Don.

Don that's AMAZING - post further info here.

Was your patch good and tight? Are you sure - 12" - really -???

When Ruger first announced that new edition 35Whelen they specified 16" twist. I'm on record saying I thought that the initial press releases were probably wrong. This was because I had noticed that the new editions they had made already of 358 and 350RemMag were 12" twist. Several decades back they had used 16" twists for their 35s. But as they rolled out new 35Whelens I never heard anyone say that they were anything but what had been published - 16". So in the end I figured I was ultimately wrong in my guess that Ruger would make the 35Whelen flavour in 12" also.

So that's pretty major. If the new Ruger 77 in 35 Whelen is actually a 12 twist then I like em more. 310 Woodleighs need a 12" twist in the 35 Whelen according to Geoff McDonald of WOODLEIGH BULLETS.

Please keep us updated on this Don.

Thanks.

35 Whelen

Not only did I check it 5 times with tight patches but another 3 times with a 35 cal brush which gripped the lands even better....same measurement results. I just wish somebody else has one that can also confirm the 1 in 12.

Well I just received my Hawkeye SS in 35 Whelen and I went down and did the 35 cal brush test on my new toy as well. I came up with the same conclusion of 1:12 twist. I did it a couple of times, basically started the brush into the bore where it was snug fit, marked the top of the rod with a sticker and pushed it down until it did 1 full revolution and it measured roughly 12", so in my eyes I believe it is a 1:12 twist. I just can't wait to get this gun to the range and test it out.:D:cool:

Thanks very cool - just asked for that on your other thread.

I wonder if Ruger just made an "in house" unannounced change or maybe they've been 12" all along.

Now Don and Digger2 pleease - what is your three digit prefix (first three numbers) of your serial number? That helps identify when it was made.

It was probably a typo from the start. I can't imagine they would bother to make 1:16 barrels, when they are already using 1:12 for the .358's.

Sorry guys. Guess that won't help with just the prefix. From this chart - what year then? This chart is straight from Ruger's Website - no mention of 35 Whelen but there is an obvious typo - a "358 Win Mag" (???).

The ser # in mine is 710-64652 so mine was also in 2008.
Thanks! Don.

Site search engine actually worked this time - read it for yourself what I said almost two years ago. blargon opened the thread by noting the new Hawkeye 35Whelens were on the horizon. In my first post July16/08 I remark,

Another thought (educated (?) guess really) - I bet they actually make it with a 12" twist. Time will tell but they changed to a 12" twist for their 350RemMags and use it in their 358wins. So I think the initial info supplied may be wrong. But time will tell.

I would say time has somewhat vindicated my guess work in some measure. I deserve an "I told you so" on this:D. Appreciate you boys doing the actual hard lifting of measuring the twist. Those should be fine shooters. Make friends with ReL15.

I realize this is an older thread but I also just recently got a ruger hawkeye in 35 whelen and my serial is also 710-64### and I also measured the twist which is also 1-12".

Cheers
