Ruger 77 MkII rear sight.

Hope this is the right place for this question! I have a Ruger model 77 Mk II 30.06, which has the iron sights on....Cant get this model now I'm told? I really like the sights, but would like to remove the rear sight so as to get my scope to fit. The bell is sitting on the sight, and the rings can't be moved. The scope is a Bushnell Elite 3200 Tactical 5-15x40. Can anyone tell me if this rear sight can be removed and, if so, how??? There is a normal screw on one side, and a small allen screw on the other. The allen screw is "super" tight, and is twisting the small allen key that fits it!! Never tried anything like this before, so I would appreciate any help/advice I can get. Dont want to break anything !!

That's the smartest thing I've seen in print all day.

Yes, you cannot move the ruger rings fwd or aft of their spot on the receiver.

Taller rings? maybe, if you can get a good cheekweld with you head slightly higher.

What about a different scope with a smaller objective lens? Or a slightly shorter scope?

Don't bugger up the rifle because you want to use the scope you happen to own.
 
Ruger rear sight

Thanks for the replies guys. I had a Burriss Fullfield II 4.5-14x42, that just touched the Barrell, so I traded it for this Bushnell which I thought would fit nicely, and it would have if it had been the same length as the Burris! Unfortunately, it is a little longer, and just sits on the rear sight! I just got the scope today, and it is very frustrating. I have been tring to trade my medium rings for higher ones for some time, but not found any. Can't afford to buy new at the moment. I guess I will just trade scopes again. I do like the Bushnell tactical, especially the good eye relief for the 30.06..
Next time I'll have to find out the length of the scope I trade for!!:redface:

Couple things you can do to remove the screw, Get a can of Kroil penatrating oil and let it soak for 24hrs.
Get a high quality allen wrench that fits properly(good one's don't bend), Lastly use a soldering gun, get the tip hot then touch the head of the screw for 5 to 10 seconds then try the allen wrench to remove it.

With any luck the screw will come out and you can carry on with scope mounting.
