Need some advice. My son is going sheep hunting, wants to put a synthetic stock on his ruger 77 in 7mm mag, that is lightweight and doesn't require a lot of fitting. What's the best in your opinions, and how much weight difference will there be. Thanks for all the help. Jack

I thought they stock's weren't interchangeable between "generations".

I only have the tang safety ones, neither of Mark series so can't say for sure

If its a markII without tang safetyn find a canoe paddle like stated above. If its a tang safety you could get a cheap butler creek one for now or a bell and carlson forever. But it would take awhile for the bell

Thank you for the quick replies, It is the older tang safety , probably late 70's ? My son is in Calgary and I can't just remember for sure
so I guess the canoe paddle stock will not fit? According to him the factory stock weighs 39 oz, so I am wondering just how much weight he would gain (or should I say lose) :) with the bell and Carlson etc. The carbon fiber would be the answer at 22 oz but I can't seem to find one on net for older Ruger. Also price seems a little scary

I had to replace the wooden stock on my Ruger M77 with tang safety in 7mm Rem Mag. I now have a Bell and Carlson black synthetic. I had to do quite a bit of sanding, glass bedding, and then more sanding to finally get it right. It is now shooting good, but took a while to get rid of all the stock related accuracy issues.:ar15:

my youngest son has a couple of Mark II's, stainless, a 260 and a 270 that came in canoe paddle stocks. He has found Ruger walnut stocks for both and neither has any accuracy problems when switched back and forth, but then again it's all Ruger. For me, it would be devastating to fire that 7 Rem Mag in a canoe paddle, but then again, I guess I'm a wousy! I have to draw the line at 30-06 in a heavier gun, Ruger No.1. Once upon a time I had a T/C single shot in 7 mag, I didn't like it at all. When the guy that was buying it said "that must really get your attention, when pulling the trigger?" I answered truthfully! OP, I hope your son is as tough as nails. :p

The canoe paddles weigh more than the wood stocks iirc, they definitely are no lightweights but are more durable.
The 7 mag 77 tang safetys are heavy and there isn't too much worth doing to make it lighter. Maybe look for a tang safety 270 as they have shorter lighter contoured barrels.
