Ruger Alaskan open sites?? or other suggestions

The Ruger sights are very nice, but I really prefer a ghost ring, or peep, and don't like the mounting options on the Ruger with their proprietary rings.
I am going through this now with a 77/357.
If you buy something like the new Savage that takes a basic weaver mount you can put a simple skinner peep on the rail and likely work with the standard front sight.
Just my 2 cents.

For the money that would be my choice.
If you never use open sights and this is just a backup gun then you likely arn't gonna invest in aftermarket sights anyways though.
Why not save the $300 and go with the savage.
Spend the extra cash on a few boxes of ammo, and get out there and practice with those iron sights!
The cheaper gun with lots of practice is better than the expensive gun with no practice!

Ruger alaskan on EE $900 plus shipping. I have one of these, I dont mind the open sights. I did put a 1.75-6x32 scope on mine though, but that was my intention from the start. Just curious, why does it have to have open sights only, why not a scope?
the factory sights on my King are nice, work well out to 100 yards with 350gr Woodleighs. I use a scope in QD rings for most hunting but sometimes I pack the gun with irons

The sights on the Rugers are quite good, IMO. Quick to use.
If you've never used open sights before, I suggest getting a .22 and a brick of ammo and go out plinking. Sight it in, then get away from the bench and shoot offhand. When you decide on a rifle, a lot of dry fire practice helps enormously.
Personally, I've never shot consistantly well with the big open V of the express sights, and I'm used to shooting irons. I find a smallish V and a large bead much better.
The rifle in the above photo is a BRNO ZKK 602, which has been replaced by the CZ 550. You might want to take a look at the CZ's before you make a decision, or look for a used 602.

NECG offers a really slick peep sight that attaches to the Ruger receiver bridge by way of the scope mounting dovetail. It's a real beauty.

The problem with that peep is that it will more than likely require a taller front sight to go with it. It is also pretty bulky, and it sits pretty high on the reciever. Just doesn't appeal to me.
For me irons should be compact, and rugged, not adding much to the gun, or more gadgets hanging off of it to snag on stuff in the bush, or possibly get knocked around.
I have been looking at these options for my 77/357 and the only real rugged simple option is replacing the rear sight with a Skinner that is made for a Henry Golden boy with the standard dovetail.
The problem with this setup is that it places the peep too far forward for my liking.
