Ruger American 7.62 x 39 magazines?

Please read the original post. All will be revealed.

You mean that he "complains" that (quote) "it's fiddly to insert into the rifle, does not lock in place without encouragement, and has the lock-open feature" (end quote).
If this is a problem for you that's fine with me. Like I said before I have five original 5rds Mini-30 mags for my Ruger Ranch and never had any problems with the mags. That's why I wouldn't call the 5 rounder a pita.

Unless there is something unique about the way a Ruger 5-rounder fits and works in their bolt Ranch Rifle, then I can't really see a problem either. Yes, you have to rock the mag in..."encourage" it...but I find it very positive and secure in a Mini and don't expect any difference here. I never thought of the bolt hold-open, but have never considered it either a plus or a minus on surplus Mausers and don't really care that it's here either.

I find AK mags worse for rocking in or even my T81. Ruger mags load the same way but the hole for the pin at the front of the mag makes it easier. AR mags are still much better though and if it was mine I would be doing the XCR pistol mag mod all the way.

"HE" is "ME", I am the original poster. Believe it or not, I am talking about the Ruger American rifle, not the newly prohibited Mini 30 for which the mags are designed. The 5 round Mini 30 magazine that I got with the rifle has the issues I mentioned. The new 5/20 Ruger mags I just got work much better. YES the bolt hold-open is still there, which I don't care for, as I always release the FP when I close the bolt to put the rifle away. And yes they only hold five rounds, which is just fine by me.

I am glad that your prohib takes the five round mags so well.

Best regards,

Doug

Please see my note to the person telling me that the mags work well in the Mini 30. I have not been talking about fit in a Mini 30, as I have pointed out several times.

Anyways, the 5/20 Ruger mags work well in my Ruger American, and my problem is resolved. Thanks to all of you who offered your opinions.

Please understand, I wasn't taking any kind of shot at you there. I know a lot of first-time Mini14/30 owners don't like the magazine rock-in required with those rifles, and wasn't sure if there was any difference with the bolt gun; I'm very interested because I am wanting one of those bolts myself and have a number of the original 5-rounders on hand.

Are you saying that the longer mag is better because of the "handle" that the long body provides, making the required manipulation easier?
The bulky magazine projecting out the bottom, without actually giving me any increased capacity, is not appealing to me.

I did not think you were taking a shot at me. I owned three or four, maybe five Mini-14s over the years, including two of the "target" models with the harmonic dampener or whatever that was supposed to be. None of them were accurate. And three mini-30s, one in 6.8 PPC and a custom rig in .350 x 39. None of those rifles had mag issues that I can recall.

It may be that the five round mag I got with this Ruger American is not to specs, or the magwell itself might not be to specs, but it is difficult to load this magazine into this rifle without farting around. The longer ones fit quite snugly and lock in without fiddling around. I agree it looks stupid to have the long mag hanging down like dog balls, but it works, and that was what I wanted.

The 10 rounders work well for all the reasons Doug is talking about. I actually don't mind a slightly protruding magazine as it makes a nice "handle" for carrying and can help stabilizing the gun working the bolt if you brace off it with your weak hand.

That said, I don't find the 5 rounders to difficult once you get the hang for it, depending on your shooting position you can even push forward on the release lever with your strong hand to make it very easy to insert a new magazine.

Some polishing of the contact surfaces involved with the mag and catch would also make it easier.... the way the magazines catch lip is formed the top part that pushes on the release lever as the mat is inserted could be re-profiled to make it less "catchy".... :)

The plastic mag well at the front could also be beveled a bit to help with the rock in style insertion.

Prohib? What prohib? What are you talking about?

Pretty sure that was a jab at people that might own a mini-30 and were saying they had mastered the art of inserting and removing mini 30 mags in..... mini 30's.
