I have a chance to trade for a ruger American in 30-06 left hand for my old savage 99 in 300 savage, I just can't get over how cheap the ruger feels, anyone have any issues with the American

Very good rifles for the money

Don`t do it, the savage 99 is a quality gun that will retain it`s value or even increase in value, whereas the ruger is , well, junk to be honest. Against my better judgement I recently
bought a ruger american just because it was so cheap and I fiquered it would make a good coyote hunting gun. Well it turned out to be the worst firearm I ever owned or shot (tried to shoot would be more like it).The stock was super flimsy and flexible, trigger was pathetic, bolt looked, ran and sounded like a hugh metal zipper, it would rust if you even looked at it(never mind using it in the winter), accuracy was non existent and it would never feed properly. Tried 3 magazines and not one of them worked. Only good thing I can say is that I sold it for what it cost me to some guy who wanted to exercise his rights. Total crap is how I would describe that "wanna be" rifle.

Solid budget rifles, for the style of hunting I do I wouldn’t make the trade but only you know what you need.

Pretty much all rifles under 1K feel like junk, what matters to me though is that it shoots well (MOA) and is reliable in the field. Never owned the Ruger American so I cant comment on how well they shoot or function.

Literally sub-Axis quality for more $$.
Keep the 99. Only new budget worthwhile seems to be the 783, or the 700 ADL's for $500.
Howa and Vanguard are good values around the $650 mark.

I have one (Ruger American predator in .308) that I replaced the stock with a magpul Hunter and it's been a great rifle!!! I polished the bolt and it's problem free, and surprisingly accurate. Not the best handling rifle with the Factory stocks but that easily fixed

If you need a left hand hunting rifle its not a bad trade. The 99 is worth roughly the same as each other depending on condition and model. Left hand bolt actions are always more expensive than their right hand versions. The only issue with this trade is the Savage 99 is a collectible rifle and the Ruger American is a utility rifle. The Savage 99 will continue to go up in value as the years go by while the Ruger American is likely not. But like I said if you need a left hand hunting rifle then its not a bad trade. I once traded an SKS for a iPhone 5s that was used for only a few months and then the owner bought the 6 when it first came out. What a deal that was $200 SKS for a $600 phone. Not bad.... well. Today that iPhone is worth throwing it at the wall while the SKS is still worth $200.

I have both a Ruger American in 22 and one in 30-06
They both shoot very well and the 30-06 is sub moa all day
I also have two savage 99 - four if you include savage 1899's the rugers will easily outshoot them
As others have said the Ruger is a good accurate utility gun while the savages are not so accurate but should last forever and they have style and staying power
I would compare the savage to a Harley and the Ruger to low end Honda - one has style and history - the other just plain old works
Pick your poison
