Ruger American.....good or not??

as much as I like some of these plastic fantastics, I also agree with JJ-65. I keep a couple of these "disposable rifles" on hand as loaners. (disposable meaning under $400) and I won't lose the farm to replace it, or even lose a bead of sweat if my friend comes back to me with his head held low and the rifle in pieces. I just don't care enough about one of these Rugers/Savages/remington 783's/ etc etc to worry if one of them gets marked or damaged.
NOW, if they marked one of my "go-to hunting guns" they just better not come back. Keep it and make yourself scarce.

When I got my mine in .243 and .270 I had to pay 450 a piece. I think they're called a working mans rifle for reason, and make good hunting rigs. May not be an all day tack driver at the range, but that's not what they're made for. Around American pricing they're a spectacular buy, more options open up at the Canadian price point. If your looking at one for hunting, I don't think you'll be disappointed at all.
