Ruger American Ranch - 5.56 AR

Limited testing with this rifle and different ammunition seems to suggest that for me it prefers cheap 55g Prvi Partisan .223 over slightly pricier American Eagle 62g .223 or Xtac 5.56 green tip. Not complaining if that’s the case but is that what others are finding?

On my first range trip I popped of 60 rounds of 55gr Barnaul (basically to dial in the scope). No malfunctions and accuracy was decent enough.
I've read the 1:8" twist likes heavier bullets so my next trip will be with 62gr hollow point boat tails that I picked up on sale.

I'm a lefty too but right from the start I trained myself to shoot right handed, that was more than 50 years ago for me. Fortunately, my dominant eye is my right eye. There just aren't enough left handed firearms available to suit my needs. After a relatively short time when I started shooting, it became quite natural to me to shoot right handed.

As for the Ruger American Ranch rifle, I've found that to shoot fast, I operate the bolt and pull the trigger with my middle finger without letting go of the bolt knob. That way I can cycle the action immediately after pulling the trigger. As mentioned in my original post, I plan to use this rifle in CQB matches where fast follow up shots are a requirement. The Ruger AR rifle fortunately has an excellent trigger/bolt knob geometry to make this work well.

Nice! Although with the new magazine ban I think the days of CQB and rapid firing are numbered.

has anyone mounted an Elcan on one, specifically a OS3.0? Wonder if it would be too high?

I have low Vortex Hunter rings with a 40mm objective Bushnell AR scope on. It works just fine but I could do with a mm or two more clearance to get the eyepiece a tiny bit back for me. I might bite the bullet and get a new chassis for this so ergos may change a bit. Not sure high mounts would be ideal at all though.

I don't have an Elcan but I did mount my ACOG on this rifle. It looks kind funky but it really works for me. It's high but when shooting in the standing position, it's just right for me. Since my first post, I have installed a lighter trigger spring to reduce the pull weight to about 2lbs. I also put a Magpul angled foregrip on (another good reason for the picatinny rail there) so I can pull the rifle into my shoulder properly when manipulation the bolt. I also replaced the original rubber recoil pad. I have short arms and found the length of pull a little too much. I also didn't like the sticky-ness of the recoil pad. When shouldering the rifle quickly, it got hung up on my clothing too often. It now sports a hard plastic butt plate with checkering and works perfectly for me. This rifle seems to really like H4895 in all my reloads. Even cheap, bulk Hornady 55gr SP's are quite accurate, well under 1MOA at 100y.

My accuracy load is: Winchester cases, Winchester Small Rifle primers, 25.3gr H4895, OAL 2.210". This 5-shot group at 100y is 0.650". All 4 charge weights were under an inch though which is a pretty good indicator I'm on the right track. I'm a happy camper!

I purchased a RAR 5.56 last week and was having a bit of buyers remorse.

This thread fixed that right up. Now I’m planning all the mods I want to make. Great stuff.

OK. Could you provide me a link to more info on this? Rather not muddy up this thread with this off topic discussion.

Thanks
Moe

It’s been floated around earlier than the May 1st ban and it has been mentionned May 1st speech and after.

We will introduce legislation at the first opportunity to fulfil our commitments to Canadians to keep guns out of the hands of criminals by strengthening our storage laws, and by preventing gun trafficking and smuggling. We will bring in greater control of ammunition and magazine capacities.

The 3 karens have been asking for it for a bit now and renewed this demand along with several others, including some model that the drunk&idiot duo "missed" only 12 days after May 1st, faithful to their grave dancing habit.

If I had a/several rifles that use stanag pattern magazines, I’d buy some extras "just in case"

Put one of these in a Black Friday special MDT Lss XL chassis that I blinged out with a folding carbine stock adapter. Now my LOP is kind of screwed up and I need to change my scope rings to get the eyepiece back a fair ways. 40mm objective. What height rings are people using with this chassis? I had low rings on the original stock. The folding carbine stock adapter adds an inch or so to the LOP that I tried to negate by remove the buttplates. By the looks of it I may need high rings.

Same scope rifle combo...i went leupold medium rings nice n low and bolt handle cleared just waiting for a range day to sight in. was moa with a leupold freedom on it. good luck

Ps the clear interlocking pistol mags work but are a bit loose. cross industries

Well took it out to the range yesterday to zero. Went well. Couple observations. PMC Bronze ammo is much better than American Eagle both 55gr. at least in this rifle. Scope is Leupold VX-1 3-9x40. The charging handle is too small, replacement is on the way. Magazine insertion leaves something to be desired compared to my AR15s.
