Ruger American Ranch - 5.56 AR

You know we are living in the future where around 1 moa is considered to be a non precision rifle..... happy new year!

Ordered one of those fancy Anarchy Outdoors bolt handles from Go Big today. Looking forward to doing that install, seems finicky.

Installed a muzzle brake (surefire procomp from Firearms Outlet) and did the blue loctite trigger job which seems like it should be good enough for now. Better than it came from the factory. And an Amazon special bipod for good measure.

Also removed a very thin circle of metal from the bolt that was left from manufacturing. Hadn’t previously noticed it.

Can’t decide on a scope. Leaning towards a Vortex Strike Eagle.

Received my Bolt arm/handle from Glades Armory. So much nicer than the OEM.....

Just received mine with tool (nice touch). Also see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szkD25LK_hU

^^^^that's one of the better installation video's imo. Instead of the snap-ring pliers, I used a screw driver with a tapered flat-head.....
bigi.......don't forget to post pics when you're done!

Yes....Glades Armory.
If you're buying one for your RAR, there are 2x types. So read carefully which rifle you're buying for.
Also, the bolt handle comes in different "lengths". Bigi has the regular(3 O-rings), I have the extended (4 O-rings) version.

I ended up having to buy the correct size file and spent 90 minutes “adjusting” my Anarchy handle to get it to fit on my rifle. The cutout was too small for the firing pin to pass back through.

Looks good and works good now.

Anyone seen a heavier firing pin spring for these rifles? There's too many failures to ignite with hard primer ammo.

There doesn't seem to be wide spread issues being reported online, maybe you should get in touch with Snapperheads and see if they can send you a new firing pin and spring?
How many rounds have you got through your RAR's? Are they both doing the same thing?

One word of caution if you order a chassis from Indian Creek.

They sell two different types of chassis for the Ruger rifle.

One is made to take AR-style mags. The other is made to take AICS mags.
Make sure you order the correct one.

Both of them have had the problem since new. I usually use Federal American Eagle bulk box and I'm finding about 2-3% fail to ignite. I tried some 5.56 the other day and about 60% of them wouldn't ignite (worked fine in Tavors though)

I never really use 5.56, just happened to find a couple hundred rounds and thought I would use them up. So I'm not that concerned with 5.56 failures, it's understandable that their primers are going to be hard. But you would think that Federal .223 would ignite close to 100%

Round count is 2000+ each. I would think that it was because of wear but it's been the same since day one. I would also think that the firing pin channel was gummed up but they are clean and whenever I have disassembled the bolt they look pretty clean.

If I'm the only one with this sort of problem then maybe mine were installed with schitty springs.

On a slightly different note. Most of us bought this rugger because of price, use of AR mags and reasonable accuracy. Is it really worth doubling the cost with a new stock versus improvements in accuracy vs buying a better rifle to start with ?

I think it depends on who you are and what you want. I have better rifles for precision and better rifles for hunting so I probably won't be putting them in a chassis and adding extras.

But just like AR15's, some people like to dress them up into precision rifles and some want small handy carbines. So I can see these ending up as everything from rough truck guns to heavily modified with fancy parts. All depends on who you are and what you want to do with the rifle.

Well 2 duds out of the box would be schitty luck for sure, I haven't tired any 5.56 yet in mine. I also haven't taken the bolt apart to look at the spring but one video I saw it looked almost completely compressed when removed so it's not like you could shim it with a washer to try and increase the force a bit.
