Ruger American Ranch 5.56 - officially sub-MOA if I'm not the one shooting it

I'm curious if I'll get even better results with heavier and more expensive match-grade ammo.

What do you guys think? If my rifle likes PMC X-TAC 62 grain ammo (and is able to get into the 1 MOA range with it), would heavier 70+ grain ammo do even better? I know that it doesn't like the 55 grain American Eagle and PMC Bronze ammo.

Assuming I can actually do my part next time.

Doubt it shoots any match ammo worse than bulk battle pack FMJ but who knows!

Weight may well be secondary to the inconsistency of bulk FMJ ammo here...would think something like 55gr vmax or ballistic tip (or 60gr) *should* do better than bulk loaded FMJ.

xtac is pretty good for bulk ammo. The american ranch has a 1-8 barrel so it should shoot 75 grains well but my experiments were disappointing. my rifles shot match 53 grain and vmax well.

It’s odd that they do t make a LH .223, it’s one I was looking at recently. They make LH American’s in .243 and 6.5cm iirc but not .223, which seems odd due to the popularity of the cartridge and sheer amount of ar15 mags out there.

Yup. If they sold em in lefty I'd probably have a few. They make the American in 308 and offer a few calibers in the American Predator, so its not like companies like Winchester that simply don't make LH rifles (actually Winchester just released the XPR in lefty, but no model 70 lefties). Ruger is one of the more lefty friendly companies, but they completely skipped us with the Ranch and with 223...

I'm going to pick up a spread of 223/556 boxes on the higher end of the ammo spectrum for testing.

Good idea! I'd start low where JBD did and work my way up.

There's no reason a faster twist barrel can't shoot light bullets into nice tight lil groups and have done it with faster than 1-8". If it don't, ah well, keep moving up!

They are odd little guns to shoot well off a bench. I picked up one of the Compacts in 243 with the ceracote and 16" barrel, adjusted the trigger, tweaked the mags to feed properly, then my brother scooped it as payment for doing my floor, I had a box of ammo loaded up for it and got out with him to line it up. Let him get it zeroed and told him to fire off a few groups. He was getting 2-3" at 100 which he was happy with for deer, I grabbed it and put 3 into about 2 inches with my regular hold on a bench rest. Then I put 3 touching simply by pulling it hard into my shoulder instead of my loose "let it free recoil" method. Let him try it that way and he put all his next groups touching. I dunno, I suspect it's the stock flex or something, but holding her tight she shoots well. Hell...bolt was even very smooth, no zipper noise, no tool marks, much better then any one I had or had seen before, kinda liked it.
So when the 308 Compacts were on sale at Tenda (18" barrel, 12.5" lop, similar to the Go Wild ceracote 243 but just blued/black stock) for $500 I thought hey why not, kinda into these small lightweight handy carbines, nice to carry, they shoot well, seemed Ruger finally figured out how to finish these half decent.
It's the same OAL as my CZ527 x39 carbine, so very handy, but alas, goddamn zipper city with the bolt lol, guess they are still hit or miss. Barrel though is completely centered in the stock, which is not the norm from any I have had through here...so that's good I guess.
Loading for it now, will see if it shoots next nice weekend.

Hope it shoots well for you Hitzy! Those do look nice and handy. Been debating the American Predator version in 308

A bit off topic but a few mods that I did to mine. The bolt release button I removed some of the plastic around it to make it easier to engage. The bolt I polished with mothers and it is now slick to cycle. The magwell I modified to accept MRX 20 round magazines.

The RAR in 7.62x39 is a laser beam with hand loads.

x2

I Mexican match using surplus with Hornady 123 FMJ's.

I also have a RAR in 5.56 and so far great accuracy at 200 meters.

My wish list for RAR's,,,,,,, please can't anyone here in Canada come up with a decent set of iron sights for these?

I would love to turn mine into mini scout rifles.

Nice, polishing the bolt and improving the mag release are modifications I'm familiar with but What was involved with the mag well modification for MRX magazines?

Does BCL make 10 round MRX mags as well?
