Just bought a Ruger American Ranch 7.62x39... it's a pretty sweet rig. As I was showing my buddy, he suggested it would be even cooler if it took AR mags instead of the mini 30 mags.

Is this a thing? Has anyone done it?

5.56 AR mags have the same external dimensions as x39 AR mags, it's just the lips and follower that are different.

There's a version of the Ruger that takes AR 5.56 mags, perhaps it's possible to get a stock and bottom metal?

You can't convert the Ruger American that uses the stock mags to use the AR mags you have to get the model that is purpose made that uses the AR mags.

So you could not take a 223 American with the standard mags and swap the stock and magwell with the AR magazine type stock and magwell and have a functioning rifle? Is the feed ramp different or are the differences even more pronounced?

I am not sure but have read it is not viable to do and ones who have wanted to have been told by Ruger it is not just a matter of swapping stocks or bottom metal. I have put a down payment and am awaiting an incoming order on one so never had one in the factory mag configuration so couldn't say what the differences between the 2 platforms are. I am sure with enough time and money any conversion can be accomplished, whether it is worth the time and money to do so may be the issue.

I asked Ruger about it and no, you cannot take the American 5.56x45 blind mag version and dump it in the American 5.56 AR magazine version.

If you have the ruger x39 that uses mini-30 mags all you need is the mag well from the ruger .223 model that uses ar mags. Problem is only place to get it in Canada is snap-shots(Canadian ruger warranty dept) and they said ruger will not supply the part unless its for warranty. Does not apply to rotary mag models. check it out h ttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAWZcrVaLyI

What you could do is buy the 300blk American ranch that takes AR mags, use a 30AR reamer on the barrel, open up the bolt face and have a nice light hunting rifle for deer, moose, elk up to 400yds

The trick is getting the stock parts from Ruger.... might be easier to find an aftermarket option.

Is the reverse true? Could you swap the adapter from a x39 model into an ar15 model and run the 5.56 version with mini14 mags?

Look at the large machined portion in the middle of the bolt on the mini 30 version, it is required to run the mini magazines. From what I have seen, the AR mag version does not have that feature machined in to the bolt
