Ruger American Ranch gen 2 in 5.56 is nowhere to be found?

Meh I have handled them

I have 4 gen1 rifles a pair in both 762 and 556 Both are very accurate and trouble free...likely will stand up like most Rugers ...and are compact/light....bought em to replace my banned semis ( ARs/minis) as short light compact tough mag fed rifles in the two most prevalent/affordable milspec cartridges avail. Their inexpensive pricing was great....a fancier more expensive version was an answer to a question not asked IMO. Tha said the Gen2s are nice...and if my pockets were deeper and or I wasn't now retired Id likely buy a couple

There probably is a business/distributor situation that limited imports. (Like Ruger focusing on fulfilling US demand first). It sucks that there is high level business reasons, But the ruger ranch gen 2's in 5.56 have occasionally popped up at Canadian retailers.

Prophet river firearms had a couple
a couple of non-CGN advertisers have had them
Irunguns sells them off their US store

Gen 1 has chromoly barreled action (except for a few select SS ones) , two-position tang safety and a traditional straight comb stock.
Early gen 1s use a rotary magazine only and a low quality polymer stock with very little support in the fore end.
Later Gen 1s went to a single stack magazine or AICS or STANAG by using a removable mag-well and stiffened the fore-end of the stock with extra reinforcement in that area. Some models had the barrels threaded.

Gen 2 has a Stainless bolt body that has been media tumbled to smoothen rough edges. The Action and barrel are Cerakoted Chromoly and the barrel is threaded and spiral fluted. The left side of the action is slabbed with an improved bolt release button. Gen 2 introduced the 3-position safety that locks the bolt. A radial-ported muzzle brake is standard.
An all new stock design on the Gen 2 is tailored towards modularity with adjustable comb height and LOP via spacers/cheek risers. It is painted a solid color and then splatter painted over that which adds some texture.
The Gen 2 stock is SLIGHTLY stiffer in the forend than the later Gen 1 stocks with the grip size/angle being identical.

Ranch models sport the 16" barrel and the Predators are 22" with different color schemes.

I have owned multiple RAR's since 2012 including a couple of the new GEN 2's.

My favorite one of all is a Gen 1 rotary ranch that I re-barreled to 300 HAMR and dropped in a later model predator green stock. It has close to 4000rds through it and is faster and smoother to run than my tikkas. Love the rotary mag. It has never given me a lick of trouble (except when temps go below about -15c) and holds six rounds.

A close second favorite was a sweet shooting all Stainless Compact model in 223 I shouldn't have sold...still kicking myself on that one.

I also have a Gen 2 that I sold the stock and replaced with a Gen 1 stock (of which I prefer). I like it well enough.
RARs in any flavor are solid, accurate, and reliable rifles that are supremely modular and won't break the bank.

I pretty much agree with everything you're saying here terez.
Besides for the comb heights the stocks are basically identical in feel. Same grip dimensions. Similar fore-end with finger grooves etc.

I ask the same thing. Why is it so hard to get a rifle from a mass producer. Like let's go already.

Because Ruger hit a home run with the Gen 2 Ranch and Stateside demand is huge. Canada, unfortunately, is a secondary market compared to the US and doesn't get priority.

If you want to score the latest greatest high demand firearm you need to pre-order, get on contact/notification e-mail lists or look to prophet river or IRG to bring you one in.
Or just get extremely lucky with your timing.

Have you held both? The Gen. 2 feels like it should cost double what the Gen. 1 does.

It's a MUCH higher quality rifle and more than worth the price increase.
Yes I have, and I respectfully disagree on both your points.

Gen 2 has some cool baubles and is obviously more corrosion resistant with the coating and the SS bolt. Otherwise, functionally identical besides for the 3-POS safety. Accuracy is a wash between the two.

The media tumbling of the Gen 2 bolt breaks the sharp edges and makes it smoother out of the box, but the Gen 1's slick up just lovely after a few hundred cycles.

Yeah the Gen. 1 is just fine and a perfectly serviceable rifle. I have one in 5.56.

The Gen. 2 is objectively a higher quality product.

Serious question, because I haven't seen the gen 2 in person yet. In your opinion, what qualities of the gen 2 are better quality than gen 1?

The reason I really want the gen 2 is the adjustable stock… Especially the cheek risers. I don’t know why but I seem to have a very high cheek bone that make me unable to align my eyes with a proper cheekweld with any non adjustable stock.

I wish they would invest in better quality control for the gen 2's. My original was returned because the headspace/chamber job was terrible. It would push the primers halfway out of the back of the case and imprint machining marks on the brass. it also would not extract live rounds. they had to be fired for the extractor to move into position.

Sent it back, and waited months for a new one.

Get the new one and the cerakote is messed up and 2/4 of the screws that hold the rail to the action are stripped out.

Sent it back. Waited months for a new one.

3rd time might be the charm. this one visually appears good. I got it on paper with China ammo. Next time out, when there isn't a 15mph wind and 3 feet of snow I'll see how it groups.

I've had a number of Americans, all Gen1. Still have four, in .223 (including what I believe is the stainless gun mentioned by Sun'n'Steel above :)), a .22-250 Predator which rapidly became my most-used coyote gun, and a 7.62x39 that uses the stack of Mini30 mags I still have. As stated above, they are inexpensive modular rifles that let you play around with stocks, barrels, mags, etc. without spending a ton, and they are accurate and effective.

All of mine are nice and smooth; not just the ones with some miles on them, but the single American that I purchased new (the 7.62) was very smooth right out of the box, and got better with time and use. I avoided trying an American for years after they came out because of the continuous #####ing and moaning on CGN about how rough they were, how poorly finished, how cheaply made, blah, blah, blah.

I'm not seeing it. They ain't handmade British sporting rifles or high-grade Weatherbys...but they give good value if you want to buy a new rifle and get your money's worth.

By the way, I have a Gen2 stock on a Gen1 gun, and the raised comb is nice for scope use. Better yet, the removable spacer at the back lets you shorten the gun easily for use by a smaller person without making any permanent mods, and to return it to full-size configuration afterwards very easily. When my granddaughter comes to shoot a deer on my place, it takes a couple minutes to put the 7.62 barreled action into the Gen2 stock, remove the butt spacer and create a nice lightweight low-recoil deer gun that fits her beautifully. A couple more minutes puts that furniture onto a .223 for coyote use by her later in the winter. And a few minutes more puts everything back together for me to use.

Give it time. The Gen 1's (well mostly Gen 1.5's) have seen a big price increase. Especially with our horrible dollar. I expect the Gen 2's to be over $1200 soon. Especially with our dollar. Walmart in the US has Gen 1's for $450 usd. Online you can buy Gen 2's for under $600. We are getting hosed.

I run guns has them available for import for under $600 US dollars, then add, import fee, tax and shipping......$1000 CDN by the time it arrives at your home.

In Canada we are 10% of the population of the US, and theres about 10% of the gun buyers here per capita. That equates to 1% comparable market. Do you think Ruger cares about that market size? Not to mention we don't know what current production priorities Ruger has at the moment.
If the US puts more tarrifs on the EU won't that make European guns cheaper? Wait 6 months to see if the US dollar slides and/or there's a surge from the EU makers. You might by now realize I'm not a Ruger fan, not that they're no good I just like all guns equally and eventually want one of each (patience young...).
