I'm looking at a little bolt action and since I have a bunch of AR mags I thought one of these would be ideal. Anyone shoot or have both? Which would you recommend?

Thanks

Had a Mossberg MVP .223 Varmint and it was a pretty decent rifle. Very accurate and never had any issues with it. Only gripe was the bolt seemed a bit sloppy. Besides that was a decent gun. Bought it used and sold it for what I paid for it.

I have the same experience, except I have not sold mine.

Surprisingly accurate even with Winchester white box.

Tried the Mossberg and bought the Ruger. Ruger is really accurate.
Also have a Ranch in 450 Bushmaster and a Predator in 6.5 Creed. Very happy with them all......

1000% the Ruger. I've owned an MVP and it was crap. Some of the new ones seem a bit better, but the Ruger is a much better rifle.

I have the x39 version.
I really like it! I just order the 223/556 ar mag from irungun. The only negative point is that the front of the stock flex.

I bought and then sold a Mossberg MVP Scout and found the barrel on the MVP Scout to be too heavy. Admittedly that was in .308, but to me a rifle like that should be a light and portable... But they put a heavy profile barrel on it. Even at 16" length barrel, the rifle was ridiculously front-heavy, didn't balance well.

I have no experience with the Ruger American, but even just looking at photos it's obvious that the Ruger American barrel profile is definitely thinner.

Comparing stats, the .223 Ruger American Ranch is at 6.1 lbs, while the .223 Mossberg MVP Patrol is at 7 lbs. That additional .9 lbs on the MVP is all hanging out the front, because of that fat barrel on the thing. That's why I found the MVP I owned to be so front-heavy.

For overall weight and balance, I'd lean towards the Ruger American.

I have found the newest version, at least the 5.56/AR Mag version, to be plenty stiff out front.... no pun intended

I had a mvp and it was a great shooter. Only thing I didn't like was the weight and the sloppy bolt.
Sold it and picked up another American ranch, really like the length and the lighter weight.

The Ruger would look like a fine rifle if it were available in colours other than Pale Babypoo. Sad, really, but I suppose it encourages you to focus your attention downrange rather than looking down at the rifle.
