Just picked up a Ruger American Rimfire compact in .22 LR. Looking forward to firing it but haven't had an opportunity yet as its been pouring with rain here ever since I brought it home. So far my impressions are it has a really nice accu-trigger (copy of the savage basically) that is adjustable, really smooth bolt, and takes the BX style magazines that fit he 10-22 which I already have a couple of, it has a simple bolt release which allows for easy strip and cleaning, and come with 2 different stock modules that allow for a lower comb if you are shooting on iron sights and a raised comb for use with an optic. Really solid little bolt gun from Ruger one I hope to teach my two kids to shoot with although they are both still a little young. Considering the price of some other Ruger bolts this one seems like as great value at $360.

I was wondering if anyone else has one of these or what the communities thoughts are? Seems like a really solid little gun for a pretty reasonable price.

Congratulations looking forward too a range report. Try lots of different ammo too see what it likes best.I'm getting good results with cci mini mag and SK standard plus. Are you going to scope it?

Yes sir I expect I will throw a scope on it, although I may wait until next year. I have a reflex and a red dot I can put on it in the mean time but the plan for now is to just use the iron sights and take my nephew out with a 10/22 I built and loaned to him.

I agree I'll need to run a few different rounds through to get a feel for it.

I have a lot of different ammo to try in it. Winchester Wildcat 40 grain, Winchester Bulk 36 Grain, Remington Yellow Jacket, Remington 22 Thunderbolt, American Eagle 38 grain, CCI Stinger, CCI Subsonic HP, Federal 40 Grain. I will look for some CCI Mini Mag to run through it.

Congratulations on getting an outstanding firearm. I've had mine for over a year and I love it. It eats all sorts of ammo. Never had a problem. Very accurate. Fun to shoot. Ruger makes some great products!

Like what I see and hear about this new bolt action rimfire.

But......

I truly wish they would have designed it to use the same barrels (and mounting system) as the 10/22.

And I am glad that they did not, anytime you come up with some quick change barrel system, like the 10/22, you will have accuracy problems.

I agree one of the reasons I chose the bolt RAR is because it had a different barrel from the 10/22. I have a 10/22 and its fine but I wanted a small accurate bolt to teach my kids on. I know lots of guys like the customize ability a 10/22 gives them but to be honest I'm getting annoyed at Ruger shipping 10/22 with and heavy lousy trigger then offering up a BX trigger to replace it with. Hey guys....here's an idea why not ship it with the BX trigger to start with? Thats fine if you charge a little more but honestly to ship it with that trigger when you have made a better one is a bit of a piss off to me. This RAR trigger is great, the bolt is smooth and the barrel is supposed to be quite good. Why spend money it on a 10/22 you then have to upgrade when you can just buy a bolt and start driving tacks?

I just looked again at a target I shot with mine two days ago. Ten shots at 100 M measured 2 1/8" X 1 1/16". One shot was 1/2" above the group an another was 1/2" below the group. The other eight shots were 1 1/8" X 1 1/16". I've shot tighter so I think the high and low shots were shooter error. Ammo was CCI Standard Velocity.

I see a few guys have already put scopes on their RAR's any suggestions for ones to go with or ones to avoid and did you just use the 3/8 receiver to mount your rings or did you opt for the weaver mount?

Depends if you have rings and need a bit of height?
I went low so's as not to use the hump back stock adapter.
I did buy the regular stock adapter and fitted it to my compact.
Not sure I like it as I need to pull my scope back a bit and don't
have the necessary room.
May go for a walk with it plinking and see how it feels.

i went with the Cabela's Pine Ridge scope, was inexpensive and works great on my RAR.
good little rifle, ive had mine out in +30 and down to -24 and have had no problems with it.
only thing i found was that initially if i wanted to run any mag other then the BX-01 they where really tight in the magwell.
but those problems went away with use as the bigger mags just shaved away the plastic with use, and to be honest i only really use the 10rd mags with the bolt gun.

i have been tossing around the idea of picking up a rail for the top of it so i can put the scope on a quick release mount so i can pop it off and use those nice Fiber Optic sites that it came with - but i havnt gotten around to that yet.
