Ruger American Rimfire .22LR

I have one in .22wmr. Leupold 2-7 rimfire on the dovetail, but I'm going to change to bases. Seems to like the cci 40gr.

Man I'm impressed with this little bolt. It drives tacks! First 5 shots scored 4 kills out gopher hunting east of the ranch with the factory iron sights and the one miss was my fault I was chuckling so much I threw my shot off. I ran through Winchester Wildcat 40 grain, Winchester Bulk 36 Grain, and Federal American Eagle 38 grain.

I am still breaking the gun in and had to quit shooting because the dogs wandered over to the field to see what I was up to and the minute a gopher popped his head up the dogs took off to the hole and I knew I was done here for the day.

Of all the cheaper ammo the Federal American Eagle 38 grain shot the most consistently, and the Winchester Bulk 36 (from a 333 or 555 pack) shot the worst with the occasional flyer, but still ok for popping gophers. I'd have taken some pics but not a lot of point as I didn't drop many and am still learning/breaking in the gun.

With my last .22 I fired 100-200 rounds then stripped it and cleaned it with a bore snake and some Hoppe's that seemed to break it in pretty well. What do you guys do?

i recently bought this gun earlier this year and at first i hated it, could not get to shoot good, broke out the lead sled and then i drove tacks! nice quick little bolt gun made for shooting gophers! I've noticed the same consistency on ammo as you saskatchestan, winchesters 333 and 555 ammo shoot decent but there is an odd flyer like you said, i haven't tried to much different ammo but my gun really like remington golden bullet, those babies don't screw around in this gun. also, anything like yellow jackets style seem to not cycle into the chamber as easily due to the very flat nose. also i with they change the butt pad to more like the 10/22 style or have some grip on the butt pad (easy fix) best of luck with your rifle! sure hope it works good for ya!

I'm starting to wonder if how the ammunition is packaged and shipped has as much to do with its accuracy as anything. Federal American Eagle and CCI rounds are packed in containers which hold and protect each individual round. Where as other rounds are shipped primer to tip and the bulk ammo is just dumped in a box. It occurred to me as I was drinking a beer watching the Jays sweep the Yankees that perhaps how the ammo is packed and protected plays a role in how accurate it shoots?

Where'd you pick up the longer stock adapter? Would like the extra reach with the compact.

Bawt it from a feller CGN'r.
Short stock is a wee bit uncomfortable, but more so with the full size adapter.
As I mentioned earlier, need to go for a hike with it and try both out free hand to
feel which is a better fit with the scope set up I have.

My favourite bolt action .22 so far. Nice stock but a little heavy with a bipod and scope. Most accurate .22 I currently own along with my Marlin 60, but everyone has their own opinion. I hit a half pound of rimfire exploding target at 150yrd first shot of the day after an evening of shooting the night before. Maybe it was luck, I dunno..

Love this little bolt, for the price you can't beat it. The only gripe I have is the 3/8 dovetail mount, I'm not a fan I wish they would just supply the weaver #12 adapter that attaches onto the top of the receiver with the gun when you buy it.

If you are planning to use the 3/8" dovetail mount, then be warned that all 3/8" dovetails or mounts are not the same. As I learned after reading a detailed review of the gun.

It seems there are low radius 3/8" dovetails and high radius 3/8" dovetails, in addition, there are also slight differences in width between these two style mounts. The combination of these differences made it hard to locally find 3/8" tip-off mounts that properly fit the American Rimfire™. After trying four different sets of rings, I finally found a set made by Millett which were part of their Angle-Loc series that seemed to work great on the Ruger high radius 3/8" dovetails have to do some searching to find a set of rings that worked on the high radius 3/8" dovetail mount on this rifle. I have it on good authority these Millett rings shown below will work if you want to use the 3/8 dovetail. These rings are Millett's Angle-Loc™ 30mm Medium Height Tip Off Matte rings (model TP00708).

Great review here if you want to read it. It is long but a good read very thorough.

I've thought that for some time altho I can't prove it. I only use bulk ammo for gravel pit plinking. For longer range accuracy I most use CCI Standard Velocity which is well packaged. One thing I have noted is that if I drop a round from the shooting bench to the concrete floor it will land bullet down due to the weight of the bullet and if I then load and fire that round it will be a flier.

Thanks that confirms some of what I suspected, and I agree it is not proof but it will affect what I buy going forward. Although I can't prove it what I have observed up until this point I am convinced it is true. CCI packaging is excellent, I have also noticed despite being cheap Federal American Eagle is packaged well enough with a little plastic spacer in each box and of all the cheap rimfire ammo I shoot it is by far and away the most consistent and reliable.

this is my rig( well its mine she forced me to buy it(how many of you can say that?!?) till she gets her pal and rpal) with a Nikon 2x7 p-rimfire scope bought it a P and D with the nice grey cryptic camo. this was my first target and sight in with minimags at 50 yards, not that bad fresh out of the box .

Beauty! I took my son and one of his friends out plinking tonight. I'm really impressed with how accurate this little gun is. Where did you pickup the bipod? I like the look of it. Might have to add that to the list for my rifle

My cz 452 shoots win 333 darn good. Federal bulk packs not so good (1.5"+ at 50 yards)

Still using weaver rings on the dovetail. Haven't changed as it is consistently shooting under 1" at 100 yds...:)

Love my American .22 but the front fibre sight fell out and I lost it. Can't find a replacement anywhere.. and its a bit heavy with a bipod and scope. Other then that, I can shoot it all day with great results.
