co-worker and myself ordered up a Ruger American Rimfire Target in 17HMR each.
we have been waiting for these to get up here since their release and im not gonna lie this is a gun i have been very excited to get my hands on!

out of the box this gun is super nice!
Ruger has definitely jumped up their Quality Control!
the laminate stock is really nice, same as the Boyd ones i have, real nice coloring.
but the blueing on the gun.... wowsers i haven't seen blueing this deep and rich on a Ruger for a long long time!

i climbed over both guns with a fine tooth comb looking for any imperfections and im happy to report i could not find one blemish on either gun.
the action is nice and smooth, little hick-up when it turn down but my normal Ruger American Rimfire was the same way and smoothed out nicely after a day of shooting so i have every expectation this one will as well.

all in all im very excited about this purchase!
this is my first 17HMR and i have been eager to get one for a while now.
i tossed and turned at night trying to decide if i wanted the 22 version of this gun or the 17.
the 22 would be cool because it can use all the mags out of my 10/22's with no problem.
but i dont have a 17HMR and i really wanted to try that platform out!

so the 17HMR won!

i also ordered up a Cabela's Pine Ridge 17HMR specific scope, kinda lucky night for me, they where on sale for 50% off!!!
and with free shipping the gun ran me $630 and the scope ran me under $90 so for $700 plus change the gun is all set up.

ive been out in my shop comparing it too both my Ruger American Rimfire in 22 that ive added some stuff onto (oversized bold handle) and also my Savage BTVLSS.

if anyone out there has the Savage BTVLSS (or BTVSS for you right handed shooters) the gun is pretty much identical except in blued of course.

will go pick up some rings tomorrow at my LGS and mount the scope and then head out to the range.
and as luck would have it im on holidays now for a month so i better pick up a brick of 2 of ammo while im there!!!

Very nice looking guns!

How do you like the black RAR? What caliber did you go with? Is that the 22" bbl?

i really like the Black RAR, its a 22LR with a 22" barrel.
i picked it up back when they first made it to Canada, got it for a steal, $315 from my LGS back at the beginning of 2014.

my dad has a Savage BTVSS in 17HMR.
i would love to shoot that and my new Ruger side by side and compare them as they are pretty much the exact same gun just from different manufacturers.
would be neat to see who made their gun better!

so, interesting day.
set up both rifles today, got some decent rings in the right height, but found a glitch with both rifles.
ill get into that tomorrow, i have to do some work on the pics to show where the problem was.
but by the end of the day i got both mounted with the optics and guns are ready to hit the range tomorrow!

no, actually the rail was not fully locked down on the front because the front 2 screws on both rifles was not drilled deep enough.
and i mean it was a little thing, like 0.5 of a mm was all i had to take off of them to get them to seat properly.
but if i hadnt been crawling over the rifle i would not have noticed but the rail actually bounced a mm on the front.
i made a video with my ipad ill try to put it up later today to show everyone.

and yes, those are short rails.
i never thought about that but ya, now that you mention it they are rather short.
im use to the Dlask rails that run the entire length and hand over on the front of the receiver!

here are some pics.
if you look close you can see that front 2 screws for the rail do not go down as far as the back 2.
and once you get the rail on that shallow cut does not allow you to lock the rail down 100% solid.

Visiting my dad down south.
today we took our 17HMRs out to the range.
his is the Savage BTVSS which is the exact same gun as mine just in stainless from Savage.

i had 3 brands of ammo i was still testing.
very impressed with the run.

i tested ammo at 25m and 50m.

So far my gun is liking the Hornady and the Federal but the CCI seems to not making as tight of groups.
