I'm interested in a relatively inexpensive rifle for my wife and/or daughters use at the range and/or hunting. I have been looking at the Savage Axis and the Ruger American, both around the same price range. Does anyone have any experience with either / both, together with their opinion on the relative quality comparison between them? The calibers I am considering are .243 or 7-08.

Thanks.

Get the axis and put a laminate Boyd's stock on it...wholesale sports has the ss axis package on for I think 389.00 right now....hard to beat that!

I've got the axis in .223 and it works quite well. I use it at the range and have it for coyote/small game hunting. Quite accurate and consistent. My brother in law picked up one in .243 for predator control and deer hunting on the farm. I've handled the ruger but just like my savage better, just personal preference as both will do the job. The better price and availability could be the deciding factors. Happy shopping/hunting.

They are both econo-rifles with similar features. I don't like the look of the Axis atho I heard they shoot well. I'd go with the Ruger.

the axis all the way. seems like savage's barrels QC is tight. savage has the best barrels out the box ,their low line is no exception.

The 3 centre fire savages I've had have all shot really good. I had 2 axis'(sold one) and now a model 14 ss. All shoot excellent.

My last axis in 223rem

I'm in the same boat lol.

From what I have seen its close on many counts.
Personally I may go with the Ruger as I like the bolt and mag better.

Interesting reviews...

I will give a ringing endorsement to the ruger American.bought one in .243 because i wanted to try the calibre without breaking the bank.adjusted the trigger and mounted a good scope and headed to the range.Wow, very accurate.i have rifles costing triple but i love this lightweight, inexpensive tack driver.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.. they are all pretty top notch reputable brands with excellent track records. I was looking at the ruger american, and if I hadn't held a marlin 336 afterwards I would buying a ruger american as we speak.

Given a choice between the two, I'd take the Ruger. It's mostly aesthetics though, something about the Axis stock just turns me right off (not that the American is much prettier). I have a Savage and it's quite accurate. My favorite bargain rifle is the Vanguard, series 1 is fairly economical if you can find one.

SAME here. The axis stock just looks... well hopefully that's not something you care about lol. Ruger is actually pretty decent looking IMO, especially given the price point. It just feels better in my hands.
