Ruger American....wow, what a piece of crap!

I have a RAR Compact in 243 and it is one of the most accurate guns I have shot. With factory ammo (Hornady American Whitetail) I've gotten groups around the 5/8" mark at 100m. As long as I do my part I can easily shoot sub MOA. Just have to make sure I don't heat up the barrel too much. Others may have different experience but I think its a great rifle for the price and Ruger cut all the right corners in the design.

I think it must be said that all "value" rifles (783/American/Axis) are disposable rifles, junk not meant to last a couple shots before getting rid of the thing, or at the very least a 2nd back-up to the 1st back-up rifle at the hunt camp.

You will not find quality in a sub $400-$600 rifle, hands down. Save the cash and double that amount if you want an actual rifle.

A couple of shots eh? Maybe a bit of an exaggeration there?

No, he's right. The 783 I got in 7mm Mag, just to see how close they were to the Marlin XL rilfes, no longer shoots as good as the it did 400 shots ago.

Best it will do now is a mag full, three shots, into 2 3/4" at 300 meters, and you really have to hold hard to get that! ;)

Damn that's terrible....lol.
I bought a 7mm in 783 after your initial review, already had the 30'06 version which shot MOA on a bad day. Haven't worked out the 7mm too hard yet, but it looks to be about as terrible as yours....

SOOO !!! What your saying is that a rifle that shots sub MOA isnt acceptable to you ? Well if you want to throw it away ill take it

mine has all the issues the OP stated, lots of tooling marks, it also shoots federal fusion 180 gr, in a 1 inch hole, it's a 30-06 and I will be using it for moose this fall

I was at the gun counter the other day as I'm looking for another lightweight. I was looking at remington mountain, browning micro, tikka t3, stuff like that when the guy hands me an american and says "now this is a nice rifle". There was a 1/4"x1/4" spot of finish missing just ahead of the base mount holes. The barrel channel was warped and touching the barrel and I could play a tune by running my fingernail up and down the barrel. I pointed all these flaws out and the guy said "it may have some flaws but you're getting a ruger at an amazing price".

I just got one as repayment for a debt.
Hasn't any of the issues op mentioned
Stock sucks not really in love with the magazine.
If it was in .223 instead of .308 I'd keep it

I have a 17 hmr pretty much new in standard synthetic that is going bye bye soon. Its accuracy is on par with my savage, I just grab the savage, guess I like it better. RAR doesn't fit me all that good, it's just not comfortable even with the 2 different stock modules.
But in all fairness is a good looking rifle and the flush fitting 9 round mag is better than savage.
My 25 cents worth on the topic.

Don't know how this American shoots. Might never know. It's clearly unfired.
Interesting design though.
And the trigger is on par with my vanguard ii
Cheap rifle yes. Good rifle maybe.
